@mganss on Win Vanilla 0.50 and 0.51 the help-patch doesn't load correctly:

@seb-harmonik-ar thanks, yes, I had set the path to zexy in my preferences. The objects would not created not only in my own patches bu also in their own help files. And with the same prefs path, my old zexy works fine, while the newly downloaded zexy from deken is broken. Not all objects are broken but many of them. I checked a few help file at random and 4/5 help files had broken objects.

Anyway, I did more testing and I'm a little baffled. It turns out that whether I add zexy to the path preferences or not is completely irrelevant. If I do it or not, zexy from deken doesn't work.

The lib works only when I include [declare -lib zexy -path zexy], as Seb suggested. Now, this doesn't really make sense from a user point of view: first, because this is not indicated anywhere, and second, because the declare object is not included in zexy's own help files. This means that when one uses the Pd Browser to open some zexy help files, most patches are broken because zexy itself doesn't get loaded by its own help files. Am I missing something here? This seems to me a weird approach, does anybody knows whether this is wanted by IOhannes (who I think is the maintainer)?

@oid Yes, that's exactly what I find confusing, and I agree with you that deken should follow conventions. That said, from a brief research on AMD64_32, it would seem that it refers to code compiled so as to run as 32-bit on a 64-bit system.

@4ZZ4 did you try to right-click on objects that you don't understand and opened the corresponding help files? in most cases, the help files contain everything you need to know about object and how it works.... take a look at th help file of [route], it's easy to understand, if you try out the patch and see what it does. regarding th usage of $ variables please read this here: https://booki.flossmanuals.net/pure-data/dataflow-tutorials/dollar-signs.html. [change] only outputs the values reaching it, when they change (so, when it's not the same number as before for example). but thats not all: again - check it's help file and try to play with the object, connet some message boxes with numbers to it's inlet ( for example [1(, [2( ...) and a {print] object to its output and see what getting printed to the console and what happens, when you click one message twice.
the [r chn( sets the midi channel for the [noteout] object... i have to confess, this is not obvious for a beginner: it gets it's value by the message in the maybe2.pd file, which is connected to [loadbang]. the [t b f] or [trigger bang float] cares for, that the addition operation in the [+] object is getting triggered, whenerver one of both inlets receives a value. otherwise, the operation would only be triggered when the "hot inlet" (the left one of [+]) receives a value. voice stealing specifies what happens, if you run out of voices: for ecxample you have a [poly 4 1] -> imagine, you hit a chord on your midi keyboard with 5 keys simultanously -> you run out of voices, because your [poly] is only set to 4 voices (not 5). with the second argument of [poly 4 1] (the 1) you tell poly to begin "overwriting" the oldest voice with the note, that caused running out of voices. sorry for my poor english, i hope you got me. ok, this must be enough for the moment, but you can find all these anwers in the internet or in the help files and the countless pd tutorials out there. please considr making some of these, it will need some time, to learn pd.

This shouldn't even be a conversation. Just add one word to the help patch, and then the help answers rather than raises questions.

Same problem with [vcf~]'s help patch (re: "probably the right outlet of vcf~"):

Outlets:
0 signal: - the filtered signal (real part).
1 signal: - the filtered signal (imaginary part).

Now let's suppose you're a digital media artist with some degree of technical sophistication, but not quite enough mathematics to understand Julius Smith's digital filters book.

How, actually, is one supposed to guess, based on the information in the help patch, that real = bandpass and imaginary = lowpass? Oh right. I'm gonna spend a couple of months to grok Hilbert transforms until it finally dawns on me. Now that is user-friendly documentation.

If in fact it really is the right outlet of vcf~ (and it appears to be), then I shouldn't have to open the thread on the forum at all. I should be able to find the answer in the help. (I did look at the help patch before asking, but plainly the help is not written for PD's actual user base.)

FWIW I have a similar complaint with SuperCollider's documentation -- quite often, details are either missing or stated in terms that are not plainly relevant to the user's most likely question.

Hi Folks,

I thought I’d share this patch in the hopes that someone might be able to help improve upon it. I am by no means even semi competent with PD and jumped into this task without actually bothering to learn the basics of PD or RPi, but nevertheless here we are: maybe you can share a better implementation.

Mods/experienced folks, if I am sharing irrelevant/wrong/confusing info, mea culpa and please correct me.

I wanted to make a patch for PD in Raspberry Pi that would do 3 things:

• Get the abl_link~ temp data over wifi
• Create a midi clock output using a 5-pin midi adapter (I have one of the cheapo usb-to-midi cable things here)
  -simultaneously create an audio pulse ‘clock’ output such as those used by volcas, Teenage Engineering Pocket operators, and the like (I am not sure if such an audio signal over a 3.5mm jack would be hot enough to be considered a CV pulse too, maybe you can help clear that up?)

As I say, after much struggles I have globbed something together that sort of does this.

A couple of things for newcomers like myself:

The abl_link~ object in the patch isn’t initially part of the standard pure data install as I write. I was able to use deken (ie the code that powers the ‘help/find externals’ bit of PD) to look for abl_link~. Search for it. At the time of writing there is a version for Arm7 devices like the Raspberry Pi 3 which was put together by the illustrious mzero with code from antlr. Go ahead and install the abl_link~ object. (Possibly you may have to uncheck the ‘hide foreign architectures’ box to get the arm7 version to show up. This is usually a safeguard to stop users from trying to install versions of externals that won’t work on their systems. So long as you see ‘arm7’ in the description it should hopefully be the one you want) PD will ask where you want to store the external, and I would just leave it at the default unless you have a special reason to do otherwise.

To get the patch to hook up to your preferred audio and midi outputs by default you may have to take certain steps. In my version of it I have deemed the built in audio and my cheapo USB midi output to be good enough for this task.

I undertook several installations in support of amidiauto which may be helping my system to see and link up my USB midi and PD, but nothing worked until I took the step in the following paragraph about startup flags in PD. (It may also be that I did not need to put in amidiauto at all. Maybe I’ll try that on another card to see if it simplifies the process. I’m saying you might want to try it without amidiauto first to see).]

Midi: - (ALSA is the onboard audio and midi solution that is part of Raspbian). To have PD use ALSA midi at the start I made the following setting in the preferences/startup dialog - within that window there is a section (initially blank) for startup flags. Here you can set instructions for PD to take note of when it starts up. I put in -alsamidi to tell it that alsamidi will be my preferred midi output. (I also took the step of going to file/preferences/midi settings, then ‘apply’ and ‘ok’ to confirm the Alsa midi ports that showed up. Then I went back to file/preferences/save all preferences. This seems to have (fingers crossed) saved the connection to my USB midi output.

Audio: I used the terminal and sudo raspi-config to set my audio out to the internal sound card (advanced options/audio/3.5mm jack). Since I had a fairly unused installation of PD I’d never asked it to do anything but work with the system defaults so getting audio out was fairly simple.

About the patch. Obviously it is sort of horrible but there it is. Any and all errors and bad practice are mine alone.
The patch has some comments in it that doubtless expose my own lack of understanding more than anything. Undoubtedly many users can do a better job than I can.

Some observations on limitations/screwups of the patch:

• If you disconnect from the stream for a bit, it will attempt to catch up. There will be a massive flurry of notes and/or audio bips as it plays all the intervening notes.

• It doesn’t seem to be too fussy about where in the bar it is getting started (It will be "on" the beat but sometimes the ‘1’will be the ‘2’ etc. This is okay if I’m using internal sequencers from scratch (in the volca, say) but not if there is an existing pattern that I am trying to have come in 'on the 1'.

• My solution to more detailed subdivision of bars was to make a big old list of numbers up to 32 so that abl_link~ can count up to more than 4. There’s probably a better solution for this. If you find that you need even more subdivisions because you are making some sort of inhumanly manic speed gabba, add even yet more numbers and connections.

I haven’t tested this much. And since it’s taken me the better part of 18 months to do this at all, I’m really not your guy to make it work any better. I’m posting here so that wiser souls can do a better job and maybe share what I think has the potential to be a useful midi sync tool.

@elden Yes, using messages, any object can be put into a patch.

which lists the objects that can be patched and modified with messages.... at the bottom of the page it shows the parameters that can be set at the same time.
Some parameters do not set properly at creation, but if you set a receive name then you can update them afterwards with messages.

The only difficult bit is keeping track of object creation order, so as to correctly use the [connect( message to join them up.
It can be useful to set a counter that puts, with arguments, and then connects as it counts, and also spaces the objects across the patch as they are "put".......
I use it a lot for building patches of variable size......but here to build a vanilla equivalent of [matrix~]...... matrix~.zip

You will see in [matrix_test~] that there are no audio connections made. That is because the inlets and outlets of [matrix~] have been created dynamically..... they were not there when the patch was opened. You need another patch to tell [matrix_test~] to reconnect...... ... When I use [matrix~] my patch then creates [throw~] and [catch~ objects in the correct quantity and connects those to [matrix~].......... job done. I had to do that in extended anyway.
Always use input (go) and output (go next) bangs so that things build in the correct order.
Usually anything is possible in Pd.

@cuinjune I tried to compile the lissa seq patch. but when i open the executable it opens only a small empty window.
i also tried to compile a help patch for testing, with the same result.
but your example works fine(Win32Example).

Notice, how from the original two ALSA devices, now we got three - where the third one is pulse!

Now, the only thing we want to do, is that at startup (so, via the command line), we set pd to run in ALSA mode, we add the pulse ALSA device, and then we choose the third (3) device (which is to say, pulse) as the audio output device - and the command line argument for that in pd is -audiooutdev:

pd -alsa -alsaadd pulse -audiooutdev 3 ~/Desktop/mypatch.pd

Yup, now when you enable DSP, the patch mypatch.pd should play through Pulseaudio, which means it will play (and mix) with other applications that may be playing sound at the time! You can confirm that the correct output device has been selected from the command line, if you open Media/Audio Settings... once pd starts:

As the screenshot shows, now "Output device 1" is set to "pulse", which is what we needed.

EDIT: I had also done changes to /etc/pulse/default.pa as per https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PulseAudio#ALSA.2Fdmix_without_grabbing_hardware_device beforehand, not sure whether that makes a difference or not (in any case, trying to add dmix as a PD device and playing through it, doesn't work on my Ubuntu 14.04)
