Hi,

Is anyone running pd .48 on their Raspberry Pi? I really want to get that going on mine. I'm way back on .46.2 and I am trying to upgrade.

If I do "sudo apt-get install puredata" in command line, will it upgrade my current version of pd? Or install a new version? If so how do I just do an upgrade of my current version?

This is a general question, what I also want to find out is how to compile a downloaded version manually.

This is what I tried so far, in trying to get an version of pd .48 on my RPi 3:

I went to this link:

http://msp.ucsd.edu/software.html

and went to "Older Stable Release, Newest not Yet Compiled"

and clicked on the Raspberry Pi 2 or 3 link.

I downloaded a folder of pd-0.48-1

in terminal i cd a path to that folder.

I read the install text which says to run: ./autogen.sh

I see autogen.sh in the folder. When I run ./autogen.sh i get back:

" ./autogen.sh: 21: ./autogen.sh: autoreconf: not found"

Any suggestions as to what to do?

@emviveros Yes i think it must be some kind of witchcraft!! Because I really don't know what else it could be.

I did the update and upgrade. It looked like it installed a lot of things. I restarted and tried ./autogen.sh again and got the same result as all the other times.

I uploaded an image saying what my OS is. It might be Noobs, I'm not sure, but I think it's the image that came with my PI.

It would be a shame for me to have to start with a new disk image, as I have so many awesome things in this Pi, like a battery shield, LED power indicator, LCD screen, and soundcard.

If I can't figure this out maybe I'll install your image on another SD card and try installing on that. If it works then I'll know what the problem is. I've only used apt get for all my installations, I've never been able to compile pd, but I really wish I could.

OK, this is starting to get super frustrating and time consuming.

I downloaded Raspbian Stretch with Desktop disk image. I wrote it to a brand new SD card.

After all the time that took, I updated the system, I downloaded/installed autotools and autoconf.

Then I downloaded pd 0.49. I attempted to install that and when I did ./autogen.sh I got the exact same errors as I got on my other disk image. See the screen shots above.

I'm trying to not get down about this. It's just a software update, how impossible can this be? I've been working on this on and off since Saturday.

Can anyone please ideas of what to try? I am guessing it is not my disk image now.

What the could it be? I am going to walk away from my computer and read a book now.

Is it possible that my version of Automake is too old? I just checked, and I have Automake 1.14.1 from 2013. I think I used apt-get to get this.

I might try updating it and see what happens. I see version 1.16 from this year. Hopefully I don't need special software to install from tar.gz

I don't know what happened... Try it... I make a fresh Raspbian with Pd and Purr data installed on it, I will share it when upload ends. Perhaps it can work.

@nicnut I tested this Raspian with Pd and Purr Data installed image. I tested it in my RPi2 and it should work with SD Cards bigger than 8 Gb.

I hope this works. I tried updating automake and had problems and errors with that too. I can't seem to install anything in the tarball method. I hope your disk image works. I'll try it out and let you know what happens.

@nicnut Tarball seems to be a problem with Stretch...... https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=207529 so unzipping elsewhere might be the only option. You might find more help on that forum for your problem.

It will be my problem at some point too.! But there are many changes in Stretch that can trip you up....... https://www.debian.org/releases/stable/amd64/release-notes/ch-information.en.html...... in particular 5.3 > 5.3.2

It is interesting that the Pi started life as a learning tool for Noobs...... and at this rate will end its life as a brick that can only be opened by experts.

@emviveros thank you for the disk image! it works and I have pd .49 on there, plus all the other pd related stuff I saw on there. Thank You!

I can see how much I have been missing out on using pd .46. Now I can use the dekken search feature too. I will have to install all this other stuff I have installed on my other Pi disk image so this will take me awhile. Hopefully that will work out.

@whale-av I totally agree. Using a RPi can be easy and a very affordable way to have a computer. But if it is this difficult so simply install a new version of the software something is really wrong. I can use apt-get to install software, but any other method has been impossible for me. If I didn't get the disk image from @emviveros I wouldn't be able to run pd .49 and that is very unfortunate. I wish apt-get would be more up to date, and that the Pi in general was way more user friendly. Everything takes me forever to figure out how to do on the Pi.

Anyway, I am very thankful for the advice available on this forum.

hey @robbielongcat and @emviveros. I was thinking about starting another thread on Raspberry Pi and Pure data. This disk image does work great, but I am sort of annoyed at how much work it is to connect Pd and Midi controllers using this disk image. You have to do all these commands in terminal using aconnect ( i've researched this for like months). On my old disk image (Raspian I think) you can just have it set and saved and Pd automatically connects to my midi controller when it opens.

I was wondering if there are other good OS options for Rpi and Pd. I was going to download a couple and experiment to see if there are any that automatically connect as my old disk image did. If any one has thoughts on this please chime in.

Great @nicnut Well I was working in another image.. Even smaller... With Pd 0.49 and Purr data pre installed.. I already did not tried to use midi in these... But we can start it and post another image with these hacks out of the box!

@emviveros Hey. This tutorial worked for me. The only thing that didn't work was step 3.

I had to leave out the link to msp.ucsp.edu. etc.
I intalled everything else. They I went to the site on a browser and downloaded the file. Then I moved it to /home/pi/src then I did all the other steps, and pd opened.

In some crazy way I made a desktop file that opens to Pd, but I sort of did it on accident. Anyway thank you again for this great tutorial and now I am up to date.

i posted above but just wanted to say - again - how invaluable this resource is @emviveros. thank you so much.

if anyone would care to update this thread (for us non-developer-types) with a way to put a pd icon on the desktop, it would be a nice addition. not essential, but would really make this resource complete and a one-stop-shop.
