Hi guys,

I'm just working on an auto accomp suite and wanted to use [chord] to detect chords.
The problem is, that this object shows the names of chords as symbol.
I actually need them as numbers corresponding to chord type on the one hand and
chord's-root-note-to-C-difference on the other hand.
Is there any way to convert symbols to numbers like with a table that assigns certain symbols to numbers, for instants?

? I'm confused, looking at the chord help file it seems like [chord] does all of these things: (gives notes as midi numbers, and outputs pitch class)

In addition there is a pdlua external called lmap in my library which can also do symbol -> number mapping
and also h_map in PDcontainer, though there's been some trouble getting that to work in the past

[chord]'s middle outlet is the only one that gives the chord names. exactly these do I need for further operation steps. And they are all only expressed in the form of symbols.
I wrote to Olaf Matthes, but he seems not to be interested in helping anybody on Pd issues...(said he got "excommuned" from the forum ten years ago...for whatever reason...)
But I'll try out your symbol-numbers-mapping thingy as soon as I can.
Maybe it works.
If not...I seem to make one kind of chord detection algorithm myself...sadly.

hmmm... yes but what format would you like the scale in? there aren't any standard scale-> number relations, except perhaps Forte numbers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Forte_number

You can use [symbol2list] ( [s2l] ) to convert the symbol to a list. Then you can use [route] to assign various different values to the chords. Ie.

Yes, I need patch-specific mapping.
The chord names of the 3rd outled of [chord] need to correspond to numbers I would need to specify.
Every number is then furthermore mapped to a scale, I create on my own.
Everytime a certain chord is played, [chord] gives its name, this is then mapped to a number that activates a scale at the MIDI output of the patch.
I really know how to do it, except of this one mapping thing.
But I haven't already checked out the [s2l] method LiamG mentioned.
I'll give feedback, when I did.

I didn't get any results...maybe I patched it wrong. Maybe the symbols, [chord] is putting out on the middle outlet cannot be understood by [s2l]?
Could you please upload some example patch, LiamG? Seems I don't understand how to use it correctly.

I don't have MIDI hardware so I'm not able to use [chord] properly, but I am able to get the symbol to route with [s2l] and [list trim].

The symbols that [chord] is putting out are quite complicated.
Maybe they cannot be expressed as lists so easily.
They always are given in the form "C Eb G : C minor"
If I now want to take the "minor" and convert it into a number that I defy, how could I do it?
Or is everything behind the ":" not really anymore a part of the symbol?
Is [s2l] actally suitable?

you could also use [splitfilename :] in order to get just the "C minor" part (and then maybe s2l or something to split the C part off)
something like:
