I am looking for a less cpu expensive solution (abstraction) for the VU-Meter.
(A canvas works only top-down or horizontal …)
Can anybody help me with this ?

hmm.. you could change a canvas's color in accordance with its amplitude; store the colors in a look-up-table. Then it would only be as expensive as the canvas size? I'm not sure, just an idea.

Why not do it like this?

You can play around with the upper and lower limit in the vsl settings, and also make it a logarithmic scale if you want.
