Hello everybody!

I'm totally new in pure data world etc. so pleeease be patient.

In order to start using pd a friend of mine suggested me not to use pd-extended but pd-vanilla, because it is still a working progress by Miller Puckette, while the last release of pd-exteded is quite old.
So I downloaded Pd version 0.46-4, 64 bits, compiled for Macintosh OSX 10.8 or later (because my computer is running OSX 10.9.5), but it doesn't even open. A very small empty window and a console window stucked at 1%.
Once I tried to install version 0.46-1 and it perfectly worked.
I also tried to compile Pd from source, but again I couldn't: following the instructions on this page (http://msp.ucsd.edu/Pd_documentation/x3.htm#s1.3), when I ran ./configure the terminal responded: -bash: ./configure: No such file or directory. Maybe because I can't figure out if I have TCL/TK installed (even though I red on the web that on mac OS 10.6+ it should be installed by default).
Any idea, explanation, suggestion?

I am not a Mac user so I am afraid I can't help you with your specific problem, but I just wanted to tell you that I would recommend pd-extended over pd vanilla to beginners, even though your friend is absolutely right about the last release of pd-extended being quite old. I personally think that the extra objects in pd-extended are very handy, particularly to people starting with Pure Data or with patching in general - I feel it is much easier to get things done and to create more complex patches. But any one of the two options are great options

As a mac user, I don't recommend to use Pd extended. It's buggy as hell...
I'm on OS X 10.9.5 and Pd 0.46-4 is working well. Try the two versions 32 and 64 bit from here : http://msp.ucsd.edu/software.html

I tried those two releases, but no way...
One month ago I installed pd version 0.46-1 and it perfectly worked...
these are the windows that opens when I launch Pd:


...and as I told the console windows is stuck to 1%.
One thing that let me guess that I may have problems with Tcl/Tk is that when I click Pd on the menù bar I get:

instead of a Pd menu.

Gilberto, thank you for the advice, but I worked some years with MaxMSP so I guess it would be easy for me to finally move to Pd. I would prefer not to give up with vanilla.

still no solution at the moment, so I tried to install Pd from source, but (again!!!) it didn't work.

I followed the instructions in the INSTALL.txt file, so I ran ./autogen.sh and I got:

so after that "./configure" is not working.

Am I missing something? I don't get it.

If everything fails, there's an interesting alternative http://puredata.info/downloads/pd-double which is a double-precision-ready variant of vanilla Pd, which is a really nice project.

I have exactly the same problem here.

Only Pd-0.46-2 works for me, tried with the last Pd-0.46-7 give me same problem.

What's your problem more exactly.

I installed Pure Data 0.46.7 (64-bit) on OS X 10.6 and it seems at first glance to work fine.

EDIT: After deep investigations it seems that the app has been done to be deployed on more recent OS (10.8 as it is explicitly mentionned on the site). Hence if you want 64-bit on 10.6, you should build it yourself.

The problem was well explained by dgeorge, with all the screenshot.

Maybe pd is using wrong tcl version?

I see tcl version is 8.4.19 when I open pd-0.46-7 and go to About tcl & tk... I guess it Sould be 8.5 ?
Also when I invoke /usr/bin/wish, and select Wish > About Tcl & Tk from the menu bar, the window that pops up says it is 8.5.9.

So how to force pd to use tcl 8.5?

There was a discussion on Pd's list about the Tcl/Tk version and OSX, and Dan Wilcox found a solution, I think. Check the archives to see what people did.

If you are referring to the retina display compatibility font thread, I don't have retina but a classic 2011 mac with OSX 10.9.5

@dgeorge I had the same error while building 0.46.7 for the latest ubuntu. I had to install libltdl-dev, which are the headers for, according to my package manager, a "System independent dlopen wrapper for GNU libtool"

I tried to install libtool with macport but I already have it (Apple Inc. version cctools-862)

Trying to update tcl and tk 8.6.... same pb
I uninstall it and return back to 8.5 using ActiveTcl8.5.18.0.298892, same pb

pd-0.47 still try to use 8.4 and failed

Any other solution?

Have you tried to replace the "Wish" binary of the Pure Data bundle?

Something like below (on Mac OS X 10.6.8).

Infortunately that doesn't change anything...

Same problem with new 0.47-0 version.

I think using pd is becoming very problematic with OSX those times.
