Hi all,

i'm relatively new to pure data, just been going through tutorials online for the past week. I am using a line~ object and am sending a message to it "0, 1 200" but i want the last number (200) to be variable. I've been trying to pack it without any success but i'm sure there is a simple way to get this done which i can't figure out. Can anyone offer me any help with this?

The line~ object is being used as a ramp for a kick drum. Do we upload patches here for people to look at?

You can use a variable..... which in Pd are denoted by a dollar symbol.

The 200 or any other value you send into the message, will replace the $1.
$1 is replaced by the first atom in a list.
$2 would be replaced by the second...... so you could [pack] 1 and 200 and send that message into [0, $1 $2( ..... if you need that in the future.

I figured out a workaround while i was waiting for a reply

I made a wee delay to a second message to the ramp.

@NuttyMonk Sorry to ask, but is your solution working?
I ask because if [1 $1] is an object (and not a message box) then the $1 would be replaced by an argument from the patch, and not by an incoming message.
But I don't recognise your screenshot..... not familiar with Plugdata.
So maybe it is a message box in Plugdata...? or the variables notation is different?
I do see that the background in the [1 $1] box is slightly darker.

Normally [delay $1] would have the same problem, but you could send the value into its right inlet to change the $1 delay vakue.
Try putting a [print] object on their outlets to make sure that you are sending the message you want.

yes that is a message box. All seems to be working well now after a few changes to remove unwanted clicks etc. pd file shared below

Do you want the pitch envelope to go all the way to 0 Hz? I'd run the line between 1 and some factor (probably about 4 or 5) and set pitch around 50 or 60 Hz.

The delay trick is really working around a limitation of line~ which disappears if you use vline~ instead: "1 $1, 0 0 $1" --> [vline~].

But... for a kick drum, I'd have expected the ramp to descend rather than ascend. Your line toward 1 over a given time will rise; then "0 0" will jump down to 0. I'd have thought "1, 0 $1" (which should work with either line~ or vline~)... but really "5, 1 $1".

There's one last bit which is not obvious when getting started: every time you move the length slider, it triggers a new ramp. What you probably want instead is for the slider to save a value that will be used for the next trigger. To do this, put the slider into the right inlet (cold inlet) of an [f] box; then the trigger goes to the left inlet. Then you can get rid of the [r trigBang].

For more completeness: I'd do it like this. (I didn't add the sqrt~, though, you can play with that -- though maybe squaring it would be better? Then the "depth" would be square root of 5.)
