I had plenty of issues with a cheap USB sound card I bought. I wrote about it here and here

later I borrowed a Presonus USB 96 sound card from a friend and it works just fine. Pi 4 is recognized it at start, as well as pd. Is there anything wrong with using that card with pd and Pi ? it should be part of installation running for around 3 months.

Also - how can I make sure pure data is choosing that card on start?

You can first make sure that Linux keeps the same ordering of any soundcards on reboot....... https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-hardware-18/order-of-sound-cards-changes-4175666741/
... and you can check for changes within Pd.....

You can then use the information you have collected to send the necessary [audio-dialog( message to Pd and change the selected device as you open the patch.

@KMETE Try [list prepend add2]....... that should work in vanilla.
Try to keep Pd block size as 64.... that is the internal size in Pd and if the soundcard works with that then leave it at 64.

Does it make sense my way of banging ?
first symbol, then the message to the left side of symbol and last to the listofdevices ? do I need to use del ? or I can just do [ t b b b] to bang in order ?
shall I also bang other params such as samplerate and blocksize?

It should be what you need.
I think you need the [mediasettings] external....... read the whole thread.....
But it looks a bit more complex than I thought at the time.

This patch seems a little complicated. I'm not sure what is all those pipe needed for? as well as the [ASIO..] message at the top.
I only will need to setup the interface and its output as I don't have any inputs

The screenshot has some hints as to use.....
For ONE output device..... but a more general ordering setting, and input devices will be added..... why not......?
It changes the card to the one you want by symbol recognition..... and does not save the settings.... run it every time you run your patch.
It selects the card you want and sets the channel count and the samplerate...... nothing else... but other parameters can be added..... see my first post in this thread......
If there is a forward slash in the name then it will not match...... i.e. (S/PDIF) ...... and maybe there will be other problems. Maybe they can be escaped in the message, but no time tonight..... very early start tomorrow......

Thank you very much. it seems to work! So basically with that patch even if for some reason my Pi is listed my desired device in a different index in the list, every time I'm opening pd it will choose that device no matter what index is at right?

I've try to set the block size via the params message but I'm getting an error:
am I mistaken in the way I'm doing it?

another question I've got is - why not just using the "save all setting" in the audio preferences? if I choose my desired output and sample rate and block size then pressing "save all setting" ---> "apply" ; Every time I will open pd it should open it with my saved setting? if so - it is legit way of saving the same sound-card isn't it?

@KMETE I remember that there is no message to set the block size in [audiosettings].
It can be done with a [audio-dialog x x x x x ( message to [s pd] ....... it is the last in the list...... and I can build that into the patch.... but it is best left at 64 if possible so I will only do it if you need to change it for some reason.

Yes..... it will select the correct card when the index changes....... and change it for this run of Pd..... but revert to the previous settings when you open Pd again...... so run it every time you open the patch that requires that card. You can open the Pd Media Audio Settings window and save the settings if you wish..... but if the card has a different index on the next run you will still need to run this patch so that would be pointless.

Thank you for the explanation regarding the "save all settings" in the audio settings. Now I understand why is needed to check for the desired card and choose it when the patch is loaded.
Regarding the block size - I don't have my pi running at the moment but I remember that last time I run it I needed to set the block size to 512 because lower then that was producing some undesired clicks. Does it make sense?

I would like to have the ability to change the block size when patch is loaded and therefore I will be happy if you can show me how to do that in that patch whenever you can.

edit: If we are already in that topic; I have seen two parameters I don't get in the audio setting menu - callbacks and delay(msec) what are the two for and what they should be?

Regarding the callbacks - shall I just keep it untick?

@KMETE The callback function from the audio driver tells the program when it has finished processing the previous block, but if everything is set correctly and is working well then the program will not need to know..... so leave it off unless you run into problems.

For anyone else...... the above patch sets the block size to 512 and the delay (msec) to 5....... etc.
So it is tailored to @KMETE's soundcard.
You will need to change some parameters at the end of the [audio-dialog x x x ( message if you want to use it to automatically select your card and set it correctly.
The values in the [audio-dialog x x x ( message are detailed in set_audio_parameters.pd
