So I am relatively new to pure data and would like to build an app with a user interface.

what other options do we have to build nice UI for mobile devices?
Is it possible to build a UI in React, hide the PD engine and then connect everything via OSC?

For ios I don't know.
For Android I think processing is probably best if you want more than simple text boxes, sliders and buttons.

Being Java though, it can be run in a browser on any OS....... so Safari for ios.
It has modules for OSC so comms with Pd (is / should be) simple....... http://www.sojamo.de/libraries/oscP5/
I have never had the time to play with it but it can be very powerful.........

I don't need any special UI elements, just buttons and a few sliders, but they should be freely configurable.

There are some apps out there that look professional and use pure data as audio engine. For example:

@xbix TouchOSC is probably still the best then...... it sends midi and OSC...... and buttons text sliders etc. can be updated from Pd (it works both ways)......... https://hexler.net/touchosc
Pd would run on another device........ laptop, raspberry pi etc.
I think mobmuplat and PdDroidParty are the only ones that will actually run a Pd patch (a restricted set of Vanilla objects only) on a phone.
