Hi its me again with more noobish questions, im reading the johannes kreidler book and im in the granular synthesis chapter.
Im a little stuck because the book mentions a few times a hanning window but i dont see anywhere in the book how to build one, im guessing its pretty easy or the author assumes you already know how to do this, maybe i missed that page... i see its just an array but i have no idea how to approach this but to draw it manually...yeah...i know...so could anyone tell me pls?

    thanks in advance

Hi, its been a while since ive been here.
Im trying to send random floats to an array on the y axis between -1 and 1, my idea for this is to use waveshaping and i want the waveform to be changing constantly while i change other parameters.
Ive used [randomF] but it only goes from 0 to 1... is there a way to make it count between -1 and 1? is there another object that does what i want? id apreciatte your help very much.

    Hi everyone

Im trying to build "complex" waveforms (squarewaves, triangle and sawtooth) using only [osc~],(im obviously avoiding trigonometry here...), i already have the relationship between frequencies for each waveform but id like to know the amplitude difference between each partial because im not getting the shapes when i look at them in an array.

if anyone can give me a table or a simple arithmetic explanation would be great.
Ill be looking for a math teacher as soon as i can afford one, i promise...

    Thanks in advance.

    hello

im trying to connect Pd to Ableton so i can modulate different parameters in the midi instruments in Live without using a control surface (since i dont have one).

so far i can only send midi note on messages through IAC Driver but i cant modulate, for example, the envelopes or the time knob in the Operator.
I tried to look for some sort of midi implementation chart like in Reason but didnt find it anywhere in the manual.
I also tried using [ctlout] but couldnt make it work, so now i dont know what to do.

Im using Pd extended on a mac OSX 10.5.8 , ableton live 8.1.5

Thanks in advance and sorry if im making too much questions recently, im using pd a lot these days.

here is my first attempt to make something useful and musical in PD.
Been working on it for about 2 weeks or so... i wanted to add more features but i still need to learn more and for now i think it does a good job.
Its a sequencer based on FM synthesis, nothing fancy here except maybe for the random frequency on the carrier and modulator each step. I tried to do it with a simple gui but failed miserably so youll have to connect and disconnect to enable and disable that feature.

Also, you have to input the values before you start the patch otherwise youll get noise or the patch just wont work (didnt want to use loadbang because i couldnt find a way to hide it)

Id apreciatte if you leave some comments, ideas, if you want to improve the patch id like to see what youve done with it.
Please dont be mean or rude ive been only using pd a few months.
Thanks to Dr. Hernandez for his video tutorials on youtube i couldnt have made this without them.

im reading charles dodge computer music book and ive come across a mathematical expression to calculate the basic equal tempered division
    the book says

"(i is equal to the interval I raised to the 1/N power). For the 12-tone equal tempered system, the basic division of the octave is the semitone (I = 2), and so i is equal to 2 raised to the 1/12 power. Thus two adjacent tones in this system tuned a semitone apart have a frequency ratio of 1:2 raised to the 1/12 power or 1:1.05946..."

id like to know exactly what is the procedure to get the number 1.05946

ive attached a patch in PD that multiplies this number to a given frequency and the result is a frequency a semitone apart

    help please!

    Hi

im currently working on a patch that will eventually become a beat machine based on FM synthesis and im trying to include knobs and faders but they dont seem to select numbers so smoothly, like if i want to select the frequency of the carrier it goes 623,657,690... etc

is there a way to smooth the knobs and sliders so it goes 600,601,602?
i tried to use [line] but that didnt seem to work either... i guess i was using it wrong, any help will be greatly apreciatted.

Hello im reading about arrays and how it can read to .txt files...

im wondering where those txt files are saved when you send a message to an array and what do i have to type in a .txt file to make an array read a .txt file, do i need to create the .txt file with a some syntax or is it just numbers...

i know its a reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally simple borderline stupid question, id just like to know.

    Hello everyone!

Ever since i started using pure data and discovered csound, reaktor 5, max msp, arduinos and supercollider, ive been flirting with the idea of pursuing a career in Systems Engineering to develop my own software but im not sure if its the right career choice since i want to program software for audio purposes, so ive considered something like electroacoustic music since all the schools that teach this, teach Csound or Max/Msp but i dont want to deal with the music theory im only interested in the technology-programming-acoustic-audio part so im a bit confused.

ive been doing all the research for myself for acoustics, digital audio and visual programming languages like pure data, max/msp or reaktor and id love to tackle Csound as well but i feel but i feel it will take me forever to fully understand and even more to build what i want.

    so my question is

how much would a career in systems engineering would help me to program audio effects or audio software??

    i really need help here....

    hello

im curious how to control reason using pd on a PC (like sending midi notes to a malstrom, nothing fancy) and id like to know just what to enable in the machine.
i know how to do it on a mac, id like to know how to do it on pc.

hello, its me again with more newbie questions.

im studying with johannes kreidler book and there is a formula on converting midi notes to hertz on chapter 3 (audio) that im not sure i understand.
i know there are [mtof] and [ftom] objects but since its on the book as a formula im guessing its important and i wouldnt like to skip it just because the computer can do it for me.

according to the book the midi to hz formula using the [expr] object is
    expr 440*(pow (2, (($f1-69)/12)))

if the midi note is 39, the frequency is suppossed to be 77.78 but when i try to do it with my calculator i get a wrong result.

there is also the inverse formula for hz to midi which is

    m= 69 + 12 . log2(f/440)

if someone could break these formulas down for me it would help me understand how these objects work.
(i already know expr and variables, im sure im not reading the formulas right).

hello, im studying pure data on Johannes Kreidler's book Programming Electronic music with PD and ive made almost all the exercises of chapter one and now im stuck and i want to go to the next chapter but im stuck on this one.

Im suppossed to create a metronome that beats 5 times on 60 bpm and then 5 times on 100 bpm.

i start the patch and it beats 5 times on 60 bpm like its suppossed and then when its time to change to 100 bpm and beat just 5 times it gets stuck on beating at a 100 and i cant make it change to 60 bpm again by itself and have a nice loop beating 5 times and 5 times on each bpm.

i know this is a pretty stupid question and patch but id love if you could help me out to understand what am i missing, ive been trying for almost 5 hours... :(
ive attached what i have so far.

    HELP!

    Hello everyone.
Im polishing my PD skills and reading a lot about synthesis i stumbled upon additive synthesis and im making my patch to build waveforms using sine waves with this method of synthesis.
The problem i have is i found the default oscilloscope in PD not very good and since im new at PD i was wondering if anyone had the time to explain how to build a decent oscilloscope to make sure my additive synthesis methods are correct.

Hello im recently studying pure data and im not sure how trigonometric functions can be applied to audio, if someone could post an example or give me a link where i can find useful examples instead of a lot of theory that would help me understand, would be great.
also(a pretty dumb question) im not quite sure what a "remainder" is when using div and mod objects.
im sure these are quite noobish questions but i want to build a strong foundation so these doubts dont come later to bite me in the ass.

    hi!

well i just changed from windows xp to linuxmint and im not sure which file should i download to install pure data extended on linux mint.
obviously i chose linux mint because im new to Linux so... can anyone tell me how to install or at least which file should i choose from the list... sorry for the stupid question, i know you probably have better things to do.

    hi everyone!
well after a few hours in linux i wanted to literally chew my balls off since i couldnt make jack audio to work or get any sound out of pd using both LinuxMint or UbuntuStudio and i bailed.

I need to study computer programming properly before i go into linux one more time.
im still struggling with pure data and processing and having to learn Linux just to setup my audio was too much for me, it was just overwhelming so im switching back to good old windows. But thanks again for your help!

@lead im not sure what you mean by build, im guessing its maverick... sorry if im not answering correctly

@nau im going to try Ubuntu Studio, thanks! Luckily i have all the time in the world to sit and learn.
