Here's an odd one that one of my students came across.

He's running the OS X Yosemite and has the latest version of Pd installed. For a long time we couldn't work out why Pd wouldn't work, it just would not open. Then he noticed that when at home it did, but not when he was in Uni.

Here's the odd part, connecting to his open Wi-Fi allows Pd to work, connecting to our network in uni doesn't work, but it does on his mobile phone.

So for the time being, he has to connect to the phones wifi in uni.

Can any one shed any light on this?

Probably something to do with localhost. The Gui talks to Pd through the localhost. That is a feature that allows the gui to be run on a different machine over a network. However, for normal use they are talking through the host.
Some software (ad blockers for example) redirect other network traffic to local host as a "sink", a sort of "black hole", and "can mess things up" for Pd.....

Your student's mobile phone, and their home network might be performing the local loopback function that the laptop should be doing itself, and that your university network is not providing.
Take a look at the host file on their computer, and compare it to those computers that are working.

Well I never. Thanks for the reply everything is working as it should.

It's hard when you're not quite sure what to search, I ended up looking for problems with X11/Xquartz.
