I've been an OS X user all my life, have never once used Terminal etc... Anyways I REALLY want to try out pd-l2ork because it seems to have so many awesome features. I partitioned my hard drive and installed the latest version of Linux Mint. I went to the virginia tech site and followed the instructions exactly. I downloaded the .deb file, opened it with package installer, installed the missing dependencies with sudo apt-get install -f and....nothing. No icons, no evidence that pd-l2ork has been installed anywhere. I type in "pd-l2ork" into Terminal and i get "pd-l2ork: command not found", I try searching for the program itself on the hard disk and...nothing.

I tried installing pd-vanilla through the software manager, worked like a charm. I have no idea how to troubleshoot in Linux so if anyone could give me some pointers that would be awesome!!

usually in Debian and Ubuntu, when you install stuff from the software manager you can open it from /usr/bin/name_of_the_app. If you compile you open it from /usr/local/bin/name_of_app. If you type in the terminal the following, what do you get?
/usr/bin/pd
or
/usr/bin/puredata
I'm not sure what's the name of l2orks symbolic link (these files you open from /usr/bin are symbolic links to the actual software).

I also use Linux Mint 17.1. It seems to me your installation didn't work out very well, because I got automatically 4 links in the panel's menu for Pd-l2Ork:

• Pd-L2Ork
• Pd-L2Ork DEBUG
• Pd-L2Ork K12
• Pd-L2Ork K12 DEBUG

I installed it to the default folder which is /usr/lib/pd-l2ork/. You can also check your /usr/bin/ folder and see if you have a file pd-l2ork.

If you don't have these files and folders, please try to install it once again, and see if there is any error messages when trying to deal with the .deb file.

Thanks for the tips guys. I checked both /usr/bin and /usr/lib and nothing related to pd-l2ork exists (I found the folders for pd vanilla, however). I downloaded the 32-bit .deb file and tried running it, but the package installer app gives me the following error message: "Error: Cannot install 'libgmerlin-avdec:i386'" Any idea what that means or how to resolve?

I haven't faced this error myself, but if you are trying to install pd-l2ork side by side to another pd distribution (extended or vanilla) then you must do a "force install" (this is a shot in the dark, I really don;t know what this error is about). I would suggest you to contact the devs in the l2ork mailing list (see: http://l2ork.music.vt.edu/main/?page_id=693 ), they are all extremely friendly and that's probably the fastest way to get your problem solved. And trust me, it totally worth the trouble, Pd-l2ork is an amazing distribution!

@gsagostinho I tired everything with the 64-bit .deb. The 4 pd-l2ork icons appear in the menu bar and the respective folders appear /usr/lib but when I click on the icons nothing happens. Any idea on how to troubleshoot this?

What if you try to run pd-l2ork via the terminal. does it launch the program? And do you have any other pd distro installed side by side with pd-l2ork?

@gsagostinho I get the following error: usr/lib/pd-l2ork/bin/pd-gui: error while loading shared libraries: libtk8.5.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory then something called watchdog keeps trying to signal pd and freezes up the terminal.

I installed pd-vanilla earlier to make sure I could actually install something when I wasn't able to get pd-l2ork to run. So it sounds like maybe they can't coexist or I have to do that 'force install' trick you mentioned?

Hi, I didn't try vanilla + l2ork on the same computer, only extended + l2ork. They can coexist, but the installation of l2ork was not trivial, there were some conflicting packages and other errors at first. I would really suggest you to contact the mailing list I recommended you above, they would really know better what is going on and how to fix these errors (when I had to install it on my computer, they really helped me a lot). I am so sorry but I am really not familiar with the errors you are experiencing so that's all I can say about your problem

@gsagostinho Hey no big deal you helped a lot. I subscribed to the mailing list so hopefully I can get some further help there. Haha you actually got me turned on to pd-l2ork in the first place in a post a while back and I thought I'd at least check it out. I'll post back with more info I ever figure this out.

hehe I am glad to hear that! You will see, the main dev of l2ork (Ivica Bukvic) is a really nice guy and he usually answers super fast. My single problem with l2ork is that it is not compatible with vanilla and extended externals, so a lot of my favourite libraries (such as HOA library) do not work with it. That's why when I am using only the regular objects I am always using pd-l2ork, but when I need to use some of those externals I still need extended. But iin terms of nterface, l2ork is really unbeatable, all of our dream features are already implemented there!

Hello there @rjp9, did you ever get this issue resolved? I'm having the exact same problem with Linux Mint and Pd-L2ork. Same errors and looping watchdog: signaling pd bug with no response from Pd icons.

@DustySounds I emailed the l2ork list serv and this was the only response I got:

The problem with 64-bit installation looks like that some dependencies required for pd-l2ork are not fulfilled, namely libtk8.5. Could you try to manually install it, and then run the program again?
# apt-get install libtk8.5
(# denotes elevated permission; same below)
Regarding pd-vanilla: I have not tried to install pd-vanilla along with pd-l2ork so I'm not aware of any potential conflicts. To uninstall pd-vanilla, go to the directory where you compiled it and run the makefile. It should be under the src folder if I recall correctly.
# make uninstall
# make clean

And which error did you get when trying to install libtk8.5?

I actually have a healthy ecosystem consisting of pd-extended, vanilla and l2Ork on my Linux Mint machine. I had to first install extended, then force install l2Ork. Vanilla was easy, since I compiled it myself.

@gsagostinho Honestly I can't remember. I gave up on Linux haha. It was really hard to figure out how to get around in it, and I couldn't use the internet for help because it wouldn't recognize my laptop's wifi card.

@rjp9 that's a pity. Using Linux can be as smooth as it gets if you are lucky enough (that is, if your hardware works perfectly out of the box, and nowadays most do) but sometimes we come across some hardware that is not supported yet (wifi cards are the typical culprit). My girlfriend currently uses an external USB wifi card on her laptop, which is a bit of a pain in the neck, but still allows her to use Linux over Windows (which she also prefers). Well, let's hope Pd-l2Ork will be compiled in other OSes soon.

@DustySounds Let me know if manually installing libtk8.5 will solve your problem, and if not post the error message(s) here.

@gsagostinho one thing I want to add. I've run into some weird problems with the deb package on a 64-bit Ubuntu Gnome 14.04 installation. (both on my laptop and on my tower).

Basically, if I install the package (even if I install libtk8.5 prior to this) I do get some dependency errors and it advices me to run "apt-get install -f" just like the pd-l2ork website. If I do that on the other hand it does install loads of packages but also for some reasons uninstalls pd-l2ork, jack, and various other programs. (I guess that's why original poster couldn't find pd-l2ork after running "apt-get install -f")

I then need to run the .deb package again to get pd-l2ork installed, it still complains about dependencies but runs fine afterwards. But now everytime I run apt-get -f it tries to uninstall pd-l2ork, jack and loads of other apps.

@JohannesG Thanks for sharing this information. I remember I had a similar problem with one of my notebooks some months ago, but I can't remember exactly how it happened. Since then I have been compiling Pd-l2Ork myself and installing it over previously installed versions, so I never came across those problems again.

Ico from VT pointed me to another library pointed me to a library of more recent deb files for Pd-L2ork. It is at this address:

I had problems with the posted deb file you were referring to but this one worked much better. There were a few additional libraries to install but I was ble to get it working.
