This may be a fool's errand, but I've been trying to make an oscillator (impulse generator?) out of the most rudimentary materials.

It's simply an [osc~], going into a [threshold~], which bangs out [0( and [1( into a [sig~]. But it caps off at around 44 Hz! No higher pitches come out. I'm guessing this has something to do with control rate info, or [threshold~], not processing any faster than that?

(Originally, I was tweaking C04.control.to.signal from the help files - I understood why THAT didn't go higher, since it used [metro] instead of [osc~], and [metro] can't fire faster than 1/ms.)

Oh fiddle~sticks, I still can't achieve satisfaction.

Now I understand how to send alternate 1~ and 0~ at higher speeds, but what I neglected to mention is that I was also using [vline~], with modulating slope times, to ramp UP to 1, and DOWN to 0, in the [metro]-driven patch.

I still cannot figure out a way to make signal-data slope from 0~ to 1~*. Maybe I'm being misled by my history with analog (the Serge), where you could readily patch one oscillator into another, and sweep it from clock-rate up through its full range.

I'm including a simplified version of my patch, if Mod or anyone else feels like taking a look. This sounds great, to me (maybe that's my problem!) I'd love to be able to take the minimal-techno-sounding clicks (with [metro] around 80 - 200) and ALSO make this play notes higher than 1 Hz (even if the modulators are making unwholesome noises).

yeah, wow...it really does!

before i look at the rest of the patch, one thing to take note of here: if you're doing an audio signal, you generally should put the range between -1 and 1, and have 0 as your center value. Your patch is only oscillating between 0 and 1. That might be ok standalone, but once you start mixing sounds, it will go wrong very quickly.
easy way to change that is to minus 0.5 and multiply by 2.

ok, and i'm back, and here's a patch which i think does something quite similar to what you're after. There are 2 oscillators, one controlling the upward slew rate, and one controlling the downward rate.

The samphold~ module does what your snapshot~'s were doing; grabbing the values of those 2 oscillators. One samphold~ works on the inverted signal so that you get that alternating attack/decay effect that you were after.

finally, a simple filter (vcf~) is working to slew the signal, just as your vline~'s were doing.

Indeed mod, load's version is snapier, but yours has a little more low-mid fullness (on my crapy headphones at least). Sometime's a (rough) demo contains a quality which can never be brought back when you try to reproduce it. I love it how these kind of audio artifacts can turn in music. When both versions are synced in a counter-time fashion it will yield great minimal beats i guess...
