Chris McCormick has done a wonderfull android app, it enable you to run your pd patches on your android smartphone and play with them anywhere, provided that you keep it vanilla.

1- Go there : http://droidparty.net/
and download the apk on your PC

2- Download the attached zip, (it's a tested and working patch.) unzip it on you computer.

3- Search File Expert on the android market and install it (https://market.android.com/details?idxcxin.filexpert)

4- Once file expert is installed, fire it up, and click on Share (in the bottom line) -> choose "enable web sharing" (this will share your sdcard localy). A message appears and gives you info such as an adress, a username and a password (remember it, or keep it displayed onto your phone)

5- On your pc, launch your preferred browser enter the adress, it will prompt you for usename and password.

6- Double click on the big icon, and you have access to your SDcard.

7- Create a folder of you choice (right click -> New Dir), enter it and upload the apk (right click ->upload). Once the upload finished, just click the uploaded file it will install on its own.

8- Go back to the root folder of the SDcard, create a new folder of you choice to put your patches (say "Pure-Data"), enter it. Create a new folder called XY-Pad, and upload all the files from the zip in this folder. "droidparty_main.pd" is the main patch you can have a look at it on your PC first.

9- Close File Expert on your phone by pressing back several times, and launch PdDroidParty it will find your patches on its own.

10- Have Fun !

note : I choose to use an app to share you sd card wia wifi (because it's faster than pluging and mounting your phone each time you want to test something), but you can of course use USB cable to do all the transfers beetween phone and computer. But you'll need a file browser anyway to install the transfered apk

edit : you need to authorize non-market apps to be installed. Just go in Parameters -> Application and check the first box (something like "authorize non-market application")

Great guide, Berenger. I have it working on my HTC. Although the XY Pad GUI does not work. Toggle buttons and audio are working fine.

@andy : yes it will work anywhere as soon as your phone is an android, and you have pd running on your computer.

in fact the XY pad controll the effects, (I should have explained that), first you choose your source, then you choose effects to activate with the first column of toggles, with the rest of the toggles you choose which coordinate of the Pad will be used to control the effect (either X, either Y, either X+Y), then you play with the pad.

the XYpad is the touch abstraction (made by chris), you can run the patch on your computer and see if you receive messages from it to debug.

I have a dumb question, but I'm new to Android. Once I download the apk to my PC, how do I install it on my phone? Can I just connect it to my PC with a USB cable, enable USB sharing and copy it to my phone? Where should I put it? I've only installed apps from Android Market so far, so I'm not sure how to go about installing apps from other sources.

You can use a USB cable to copy to your phone. Once it's copied you need an app to browse your files (like Linda manager or File Expert mentionned above). Browse to the place you put the apk click (or touch) it and stay on it without releasing a menu will appear and select install. it will install, once installed you can get rid of the apk.

oh ! and btw you have to go in parameters -> applications and check the first box (something like "authorize non-market application")

The X Y parameters work fine, but I wonder if the little black canvas point (present in touch.pd) should be displayed on the screen of the Android?

@ ricky : well I don't knwow, that's true that I've never seen it on android, but it is present on pd. It's not a major bug.

@Shawn where are you stuck ? could you elaborate ? Which steps did work and which didn't ?

Shawn you can try by usb cable.

Just create a folder on your sd card called XYPAD, and copy the pd patch + abstractions in it (6 files). PdDroidParty will find the main patch by itself thanks to its name.

To be sure, you've install the .apk with no pb ? so what happens when your launch the app ? you get a black screen showing a message "no patches found on device" ?

It's GPLv3 so I guess you could. Check it out by yourself.

But you still have some work to do how would you package and distribute this ? It won't be honnest to sell a patch to be loaded in a third-party app, well now one would buy that I guess... you could but it should be very cheap... just be sure that your amount of work is significant and is worth the value, you wouldn't want to rip people off , would you ?

this is one hell of a useful app. really exciting. and deserves a lot of attention from the pd community...

i'm currently trying to make a multi-partial musical instrument tuner / spectrum analyser to run on my galaxy s2 so i can analyse and tune the overtones in xylophone/marimba bars. it'll never replace my strobe tuner, but the initial results are pretty encouraging

one question:
i'm having a lot of trouble getting a number stream out of a vslider object. if i set the vslider's send symbol to "foo" then try receiving the output in a vanilla number box (ie, not a droidparty numberbox) with receive symbol "foo", i get nothing. the patch works fine when run on my pc though.

is this a known issue?

Driven numberbox should work, you could try the droidparty-test on the project page, there are examples of this

ah, sorry - i'm a bit slow today... meant to attach a patch and forgot. here it is.

on my pc, sliding the vslider moves the red canvas AND outpus numbers to the number box just below the vslider.

but on my phone (galaxy s2) only the red canvas moves. there are no numbers displayed in the number box.

Well that's weird. Everything seems fine. I tried several stuff :
-using a number2 instead
-using a canvas and changing it's label

What'w weird is that somehow it worked for five seconds and then it froze. So label doesn't work, but numberboxes (both) work now on my phone (HTC Sensation) but only for short time ... then they froze. The patch is attached.

I know that a new version is undergoing so maybe it will fix it, all I can say is way a little, or find a workaround.
You can try the resizeable numberbox in the droidparty_abstraction too on project page, there is also the display abstraction that could help. I will look into it later
