I thought this would be an interesting look at what machines we are running Pd on.

Perhaps some of us are expecting too much from our computers?
Perhaps others are well over equipped for what we want to do?

So I'll start.

I do most of my Pding on this computer, a 12" ibook g4. 1.2ghz and 786mb ram.

My other computer which is really just a protools/photoshop/flash laden monster in comparison, is a 20" imac. 2.4Ghz and 2gb ram
Both of these are running osx.

I find the ibook runs everything fine.
But I'm not really doing any heavy synthesis, so the hardest it has to cope with is jumping all about a soundfile.

So I ask you pure datians, what do you use?

On a slightly related question, has anyone considered an eee pc as a cheap system?

The CPU is fast enough for almost all audio I've tried, video always can do with more juice, but by the time my a/v patches are finished they usually end up using 95% CPU (I guess that's when I know they're finished...).

Development machine (desktop) : and old PIV, 2.8 512MB
Live machine (laptop) : PIV M (or something) 2.26, 2GB (this was a mistake, should have invested in a heavier cpu instead of ram)
For audio i use a motu896 with 8 outputs (jamming/performing live) or just the internal soundcard (in the couch @ home).

I'm always a bit careful with what i load (certainly live) try to leave some cpu "headroom".

I don't know what an eee pc is, but currently i'm looking at some very small pc solutions (pIV 500MHz thingies) with ethernet to connect a second keyboard, or either going back using my behringer bcr2000 to have more controllers available.

Got one 588MHz machine I use for procedural audio game development stuff and writing the book. Why? Because it's a great way to ensure that everyone will be able to run all the examples and that real-time objects are efficient enough to run about 40 to a core on consoles when the time comes.

Got another nice machine now, AMD64 2.8GHz, but I use that for Csound mostly because the last compile of Pd I did was broken. People are working improvng 64 bit Pd right now, so a working AMD64 build is just around the corner.

I've a dell inspiron 3800, Powermac 'pismo' G3/500, and a 2ndgen TiBook.

All run pd well, but I'd appreciate donations towards a MacPro, as The newest of these beasts is from... (drumroll) 2002.

current machine (laptop) is an intel dual core 1.5ghz, 2.5 gigs of ram, onboard intel audio and video... better than my desktop before it crashed but still not enough to do what i really want to... old desktop i used was an amd athlon 1.3ghz with 512 mb of ram, and a geforce3... plain openGL was a bit faster on it but this one handles later directx better. i think once i get a USB interface i can free up more processing for the video and maybe quicken things up a bit.
currently i'm dual booting XP sp2 and fluxbuntu but haven't booted into fluxbuntu in a whiiiile, i need to stop neglecting my linux... i started on Pd on the old desktop in windows but when then drive crashed i got a new one and put ubuntu on it and spent a little over a year on linux exclusively... learned a lot, and Pd is definitely a beast on linux compared to windows (not to complain but pd-extended on windows defintiely seems pretty buggy)...
i hear good things about those eee laptops, they're small and extremely hackable, although they might not be the most powerful processing-wise... this laptop i got to tide me over until i can build a new desktop (or maybe even rackmount... <drools>) since that desktop's mobo crapped out and at this point it's too old to bother fixing. it's definitely faster overall than the desktop but still, dedicated video would've been worth it in the long run i think.

Used to Pd on my Pb Titanium 400Mhz-512Mb for 2-3 months.
One just lend me her iBook g4 800Mhz-1Gb. What a revolution !
Both running OSX (10.3.9 and 10.4.11 respectively).

I also have an AMD64 [edit]2,2Ghz[/edit] (early socket 754) with 1Gb RAM tower. It's running 64Studio.

I do most of my Pd stuff on a Thinkpad X41 tablet (1.6 GHz pentium M, 15.GB RAM, 40GB HDD). Lately I've been using a Novations XIO 25 as a controller and audio interface. I have Pd-extended 40.3 installed on Ubuntustudio.

I'd like to have Pd-extended on my desktop machine as well, but that's running Archlinux and my attempt at building Pd-extended failed.

I'm running a compaq laptop with a 2.1 ghz intel spu and a gig of ram, with fc8 on it. I'm also borrowing an alienware with 2gb of ram and a 3.4ghz amd cpu for doing live video processing (windozeXP).

then my desktop machines are a 3.4ghz amd64 with a gb of ram (fc8/ubuntu), and a sawtooth g4 powermac(I still hold that the design is the zenith of apple hardware) which runs os10.4 and ubuntu.

thinkpad x61 tablet that is running ubuntu hardy. intel core2 duo 1.8ghz, 4g ram. it does very well, but the multitouch screen is not as nice as it sounded, and not worth the loss in resolution I think.

was previously using apple 12" powerbook g4 1.25ghz, 1.25g ram running debian. that did pretty well, but started to choke a bit doing some heavy realtime stuff.

Oh man, I finally ditched fedora for debian and have installed the pure:dyne repos and It's a blast! PD runs way hotter now.

lenovo c460a ,a 2007 mainstream pc laptop ,with duo core 1.73,and 2G ram, my pd & max/msp & vvvv is running good @ xp & ubuntu 9.04 ;
and most of my work is about GEM & Jitter etc.

and another old laptop which is also works well till now is my old powerbook G7 with 1.33 cpu and 2G ddr ram. visual could not meet my needs, but I think audio is enough for me.

I think nowadays, the mainstream laptop is really good enough

works like a charm, lower latencies seem to be a problem now and then for the cpu. planning to buy a used intel macbook.

also use a m-audio 1814 audiocard, a little funky (the only non-hotswappable fw-audiocard???) but gets the things done. mostly use the novation launchpad for controller (a blast to use with pd).

I'm generally on an off the shelf Asus EEE 10" thingy, running Win-XP.

Don't do too much patching myself, but do download, check out, and sometimes tweak, lots of patches from this forum (my main interest here is primarily just to do with tracking what you good folks are doing).

Haven't run into any shortcomings or problems beyond just a couple of patches that routinely crash PD.
