Hi all,

I would like to know if in Pure Data it is possible to do this:

play MIDI note number 45 for 2 seconds during which there is a continuous (non-discrete) linear glissando until you reach MIDI note 68.

Is there a concept of a continuous glissando between two MIDI notes placed any distance apart?
Is it possible to save this information in a MIDI file?
[Performance is intended for a continuous pitch MIDI instrument, such as an organ, cello, choir, etc.]

P.S.: in pd I can already do the "discrete" glissando (chromatic scale, also microtonal scale), but here I am talking about a continuous glissando and not a succession of closely spaced notes.

you are looking for the line~ object.

you might want to do it linear, i.e. before mtof~.

writing a continuous signal into a MIDI file is of course impossible.

but you can design your pd patch to make it listen to certain MIDI commands.
for example overlapping notes could trigger the glissando/portameno, like it is done in some sh-101 or tr-909 midi-fications.
or you could set a note event onto channel 2 to trigger a portamento while on channel 1 the will start without.
if you dont need velocity for anything else, you could also use velocity values to trigger portamento mode(s).

@atux You will have to bear in mind that there will need to be a delay.
I think that is correct.
Glissando is possible but the Glissando cannot start until the following pitch and the time interval are known.
Play note 1
Play note 2 after 5 secs.... a 5 sec glissando starts from note 1 to note 2.
Play note 3 after 20 secs..... a 20 sec glissando starts from note 2 to note 3.
BUT! note 2 has been steady for 15 seconds..... and that is not what has been "played"

So if you have a predetermined score then it is possible, but otherwise you will have to wait until note 3 arrives before the start of the output, and as the same is true for note 4 etc. you cannot actually start until all the notes and intervals are known. It could work if the intervals are always shorter than the last, but if they are longer that upsets the calculation.

If you are willing to have a continuous pitch at times during the performance ok..... but you will always be 1 note delayed so any timing relationship between what you play and what you hear goes out the window.
Maybe that is something an organ player is used to dealing with?
