Hi folks!

New to using Pd, and running a Win 7 x64 machine- while I like Purr Data's schmancy GUI and many libraries,
I was a little nonplussed to see there's only an x86 version; would one recommend the 5.0 Vanilla x64 release, or go ahead with Purr?

@Duckett You should start with Pure Data Vanilla first. When you know the programming language environment, then you can switch to Pure Data extended or Purr Data or Pure Data on Raspberry etc. I do not recommend jumping into a fork version of Pure Data full of many libraries because this can lead to confusion. With Pure Data Vanilla you can build externals, so you can add very complicated objects by yourself to do anything you want (but this is for a later objective). Also i recommend that you first try to use only Pure Data. Connecting Pure Data to other tools is possible but this is not fundamental. Start small and simple then go crazy and optimize and change what you know. A little note about the GUI of Pure Data Vanilla. The idea of the GUI is very smart. You can build your own GUI in a very fancy way but it requires a lot of UI knowledge (not fundamental). Here is an example snapshot of a GUI that i made with Pure Data Vanilla.

@Boran-Robert Thanks for the thorough reply; I'm familiar with building things in Flowstone, Reaktor, and AudioMulch, and have dabbled a bit in SuperCollider and ChucK,, but I admittedly don't come to Pd from a coding/programming perspective (nosing around some DSP forums has led me to bump into C++ library discussions here and there, but that doesn't count).

In all of these, it's been best to start slow and simple to make sure things are understood before diving in and getting lost, so, good advice

@Duckett Your welcome. This forum is about exchanging ideas and learning from each other. It is like physics, if you do it alone it doesn't make any sense. So feel free to ask any questions regarding Pure Data. PS: Reaktor is very powerful and useful so this will only help you with Pure Data,

@Boran-Robert please don't recommend Pd-extended as it is not maintained since 2013 or something like that. It is even not included in Pd's website download page. When people start using it, it often leads them to confusion. Purr Data is the replacement for it.
