Hi everybody, I'm using Pd-Vanilla 0.47-1 on Mac OSX 10.9.5. I noticed if I use some GEM objects like pix_video, the software crashes. What can I do? Thanks for the answers!

Problems with pix_video on OSX 10.9.5

@fleck Hello....! I have always had the same problem even using windows on my Mac. Others have had the problem as well, and it seems that it is the "Facetime" (correct name? unsure) camera that causes the crash. And not just in Pd. You might have more luck with an external camera?
This will give you more control for testing........ twin_cam_not.pd and I have had it working one time in thirty........ but that is not useful.
It will work reliably with this patch........ "03b_ev_example_360_degree_livecam.pd" from the "extended view toolkit" library......... a wonderful library that is worth downloading anyway.
https://puredata.info/downloads/extended-view-toolkitSomething is set correctly before creating the Gem window and makes it work.
But of course the image is distorted.... as intended with that patch.I might trawl through the toolkit patches this evening and try to build a simple working example without the fisheye effect.
Please post back if you find the solution in Extended View...... before I do!

@whale-av Hello, I tried your patch on Pd-Extended 0.42.5 and Pd-Vanilla 0.48. In the first case I didn't have any big problems, but on Vanilla I did not succeed to open the file. Maybe, in this moment, the only solution is to use the old Pd-Extended... :-/

@fleck How strange...... it works for me (windows) with vanilla on my mac...... but not with extended.
I have never got [pix_video] to work with extended and my mac in-built camera (always a crash).
David.
@fleck P.S........ I will check all my paths at some point. With extended and various vanillas and 32-bit and 64-bit GEM on my system I might have left something out of the cam.zip that I posted above. Unfortunately it could be a windows .dll......... in which case you will be out of luck. Again......if you download Extended View Toolkit you might get it to work in Vanilla..... maybe.Does your vanilla just pick up Gem from the extended install, or do you have a new version of Gem bundled with the vanilla install?
-
@whale-av I installed Gem 0.93 on Pd-Vanilla through Deken; if I try to click the "create" message, after creating the patch gemhead--pix_video--pix_texture--rectaangle, Pd crashes. This also happens with Pd Vanilla + Gem 0.92. Pd-Extended 0.42.5 (not 0.43.4), instead, doesn't give me any problems...

@fleck Hmm..... I cannot guarantee help (not using osx). You could try iGlasses as a translator as suggested on the list........ https://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/pd-list/2015-03/109606.html
It has a time limited free use and no watermark...... and then if it works the question is whether you want to pay....For me extended is still perfect. It does everything I want to do. I have no reason to change to vanilla except to learn about its myriad problems..... always enjoying those challenges!..... and to post solutions for others when I can find them.
But I am fortunate to be using windows, which normally takes a less cavalier attitude to its legacy users than osx.

@whale-av I'm trying iGlasses and... everything works! I only see the error "SGSetChannelDevice returned error -9408" on the Pd window, but it seems that the software runs smoothly.
-
@fleck Happy days! I cannot find any info for that returned error though.
Windows just says....... "videoVFW: driver 'Microsoft WDM Image Capture (Win32)'
Unable to set video format" while working as expected.
Oh well.....

@whale-av I realized that the problem was the "Epocam" software I had installed a while ago...
Now I removed it together with iGlasses and I'm having no problems with the pix_video object (even if the error 9408 remains).
Anyway thanks a lot for the advices you gave me! -
@fleck That's very interesting. Maybe someone else will be able to test one day if they come across this thread, as the other possibility is that i-Glasses leaves behind the driver that Pd is able to use correctly...... even after the I-Glasses app has been removed?
Not knowing enough about osx I cannot see how you could test for that now...... but someone trying I-Glasses..... and who never had "Epocam"...... could confirm that hypothesis?Temporary unpaid installation of an I-Glasses trial would then be a solution!
