Curious about this...

tabwrite continuously writes data left to right for a breadth of x samples right?

and tabread reads them left to right too, right.

so is there a way to invert the stream so tabread continuously plays/reads the output backwards for the same breadth?

...scratching head, considering Dreamland, and wondering.

But as you are continuously writing to [tabwrite~] your playback will be stuck playing the last sample......... continuously playing "catch-up"....... if I understand your question......
You would have to give it a trigger where you tell it to ignore new samples and play what it has "so far" backwards.
Unless of course Einstein had a theory that could help you?

You could try to get a long vacation on the International space station. The best current time traveler is Russian cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev who was in orbit for a total of 748 days during three space flights. Avdeyev's prolonged travel made him a younger man — by about one-50th of a second — than those of us who have remained on Earth.
If you did that you could come back and listen to a whopping 882 samples backwards at 44.1K...... or an unbelievable 960 at 48K, and you would be the first musician ever to do so (probably)......
Of course you would need two computers with nuclear clocks, and a 64627200 second delay before your [tabwrite~] and you would have to hope you got back to the studio on time or you would have really wasted your time. I would advise a slightly longer delay, and an alarm clock so that you are listening when it "happens".........(You can take the alarm clock with you to the space station...... it will just go off 1/50th of a second early!!!).

I did something with delay lines that is pretty similar to your idea I think. I use [vd~] with the delay time that decreases from the maximum to zero and when it reaches zero it goes back to the maximum. In fact, each time a sample is recorded, the delay time decreases of two samples to play the buffer in reverse. To avoid the "jump" between zero and the maximum delay time, I use two [vd~] with the two delay times in "opposition" (when the first one is at the middle, the other one is at the maximum - or zero) and two envelopes for the amplitude. I think my explanation is unclear, so here are the patches: delback.zip
