hello
Just wondering what the best way to synthesize a realistic heartbeat is. How do I get the filters in Pd(-extended) to self-resonate? (i.e. with no input)?
Any other methods?
thanks

[delwrite~] and [delread~] are what you're looking for if I'm understanding your problem correctly. As for the actual acoustic properties of heart beats I can't help you.

hmmm could you elaborate pls?

[moog~] self resonates (rings) the best. But it won't ring in an unstable way without some stimulation. Use an oscillator for that.
Here's a bit of a crappy heartbeat I made to give you ideas.
I'm sure there's a very efficient way to do it with FM now. This one uses some FM on the filter cutoff
and a narrow band of noise.
Use the Source.
I think what Jo is saying is that you can use a [delwrite~] and [delread~] pair to build your own self oscillating feedback system.
Personally I think its best to add a little noise to a stable oscillator ti get the "roughness" of a heartbeat.
Use the Source.

Your example sounds great anyhow. Thanks for that. I like the roughness effect as a heartbeat isn't perfectly regular. Now all I need is to create a randomized music box....(I have a newborn-I told my partner that this would help him sleep, though it will probably mess his head up good 'n' proper!)

Congrats boonier... Hope it helps...

What a great application for Pd! Thanks for clarifying my assertion Andy. If my psych 101 memory serves correct, newborns do show preference to the sounds that they heard while in the womb. Recording the mother's voice and playing it back might also help the creature sleep, who knows? I'd be willing to bet that there have been studies on the subject of making babies sleep more reliably...
