Hi everyone, I would be really glad if anyone could help me or just tell me that what I am trying to achieve is not possible...

I should mention that I am a complete beginner so please be patient with me

I want to make a random sampling, I have around 200 sounds that I want to randomly mix - I have already achieved that...but then it gets little bit more complicated... I would like to create some "event" when the program generates specific sequence. For example the randomly chosen sequence is:

68, 56, 66, 69, 59, 63, 55, 55, 56,………and so on….... than randomly in one moment it picks up this sequence: 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63 - and in this moment I would like to programme that these numbers will from now on behave as "group"...whenever the program then picks again any of numbers "55, 56, 57, 58, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63" it will play the whole group of all sounds that are behind these numbers,

All the numbers (all 200) would have these hidden groups that would "reveal" themselves at the moment that the programme would randomly pick them just for once.

When the programme finds all those hidden groups the process starts from beginning..

IS THAT POSSIBLE (if yes, then how?) or should i forget it completely?

@Level Hello Level, Yes it is possible....... except that in Pure Data the "object" [random] is not random in the sense that you are probably looking for......
..... but there are ways of getting around that and producing very unpredictable sequences....... setting a random object to seed another, or using numbers produced from the time of day etc.

There are ways to remember those sequences, and in this case it would be best to produce a list, probably using [list prepend] and [list append]....

And there will be a way to "bang" a list again if it contains a value...... but I can't remember it at the moment........ and it's time for bed so.......... until tomorrow..

Anyway, you can do anything in pure data except use Gem on a Raspberry Pi....

Have a look at the objects that I have mentioned, and start building your patch, and then upload it with a bit more explanation when you get stuck.

@Level If you are using extended, or vanilla with "extended" plugins then this will help......

If you have plain vanilla then there will be a way to modify random-lists.pd using "set" messages..... you will have to try, and see which objects will not create........

@whale-av Thank you, I tried and read everything but unfortunately this algorithm is probably more complicated that I needed...I am not able to update it...However I made new version, that suits my project even better and I hope it will be easier since I am a beginner and need to manage finishing this project in only 3 days ...Yet I still cant figure out some (probably basic) problems.

New project description:

I have 4 folders, that have each different number of sounds in each folder.

1st step: I want to make the main "random" pick that will "randomly" chose 1 of the folders.

2st step: from this chosen folder it will "randomly" play all sounds that are in this folder...

3rd step: the process go back to 1st point, but will now choose from 2 remaining folders.

4st step: when all the folder were played, than the process starts again.

Problems:
Unfortunately I am still stuck in these obstacles that I have been trying to solve all day:

1. how to make the generator only use numbers once?
   --- For example instead of: 1,1,2,5,4 to make him generate 1,3,5,2,4 - where all the numbers are used once and not repeatedly?

2. after this, how than make the generator stop and not continue in the process of "random" generation?

3. after this, how than make the algorithm go back and generate new folder?

This is one of the "folders" with for now only 5 sounds...I want to connect this "folder" to remaining 3 after solving problems 1 and 2.

...[change] worked in the sense that it really stopped repeated numbers...But then the audio did not launched. My patch is a little bit messy right now as I am trying different things: posledni.pd

I am just wondering about one last option..

1st step: randomly chose folder
2nd step: choose one file from that folder
3rd step: back to 1 point

I will try to do that tomorrow.

The only easy way I know is using [rtc/series] (extended again) to get "unrepeated random".

To stop the metro you need to send it a [stop( message.
You will need to send a bang to the stop message when you have completed the sequence.

@whale-av Hi David, thank you very much! Now maybe a stupid question but where will I put all the audio files?

@Level I am just finishing a patch that will do I hope exactly what you wish, and also play all of the samples to their end (second patch) if you find that is what you want.
You will need to put all of the samples in one folder. If it is the same folder as your patch then you don't need the patch name for [readsf~] but if you use a sub-folder "samples" then you would have to put the file names as /samples/filename.wav........
I will post a finished patch in this post in a few minutes.

@Level Here you go......... If you want all the sounds to play to the end then make copies of the "folder_play_to_end" patch, put your sounds in each one and change the number for each one (0 1 2 3 4) in the receive object at the top.
If you want the 5 second timing use "folder" instead.
Open "master" and start the show........ I have tested (without sounds)......and it should work.
Move the "folder" or "folder_play_to_end" that you don't want somewhere else so that it is not played..........

It took me a while, but now it seems it works and I will just put all my sounds and all files... thanks to notes u left there I can even understand how it works!

Can I have ...I hope... last question? When it will run for 6 days with breaks only at night (but it can theoretically run even all night) will the algorithm start repeat itself at some moment? There will be more than 20 folders with different number of sounds in each one....I already found out that the "random" works on some mathematical calculation but I am not really sure - when I will stop it for night will I get the same sequence next morning as the previous one?

@Level I am not certain (absolutely certain) but almost certain that it is not completely random.....
Random means the chance of each number arriving is the same. But usually programming solutions produce a set sequence. If you use [random] it will always be the same when it starts.

You can use the computer clock to give a more random sequence (it will always be the same sequence for a set time, but the chance that you start it at the same time is very small.

You can manually put in a new "seed" ........ think of a number and put it in...........

Here are 2 abstractions I made a while ago. One uses audio noise to produce random numbers, but is a bit "expensive for the cpu......... the other "truish-random" uses the cpu time.....

Either will be very, very VERY random, and can be used to give a new and different "seed" to the rtc/series object....... every time it is re-started......
I have put it into "serial_numbers_on_demand_master" to show you how to use them.....

Make the range very large if you want.... 1000 for example.

Actually [rtc/series] was build to receive a real time clock and use that to seed the random objects....... hence the name. If you drill down through the objects that it contains then you will find [urn] and also a receiver for the clock......[r rtc-rs].
Unfortunately there is no sender..... so you will have to add my little patches (one or the other) to every [rtc/series] object.......

@whale-av Hi David thank you again, I am trying to work with this truish random, but I am also trying to make a second possibility of reading my sound story: in this one I would use the random select only on content of each folder (so the serial number and serial numbers on demand stays the same) whereas the main folders are chosen in order (0,1,2, 3,..till 11) and then back to 1...however I cannot find anything under "play with order" or "numbers played with order" and anytime I rewrite something in serial_numbers_on_demand_master it stop working but it cannot be that difficult only change the random with some order? Dont you know what command should I use?
