Motion tracking in Pd?
ok, so i'm trying to create a motion tracking system using two microphone inputs(using a 4 channel mic pre on Windows XP) and a GEM with just a small moving sphere. The idea is to have the sphere move on the x axis depending on the volume levels of each microphone.(ie. as the volume increases on the left microphone, the sphere moves left, and visa versa). So far I have created a very crude version, but I am using two separate Pd consoles to separate the audio outputs, therefore I have two separate GEM screens with a sphere in each. Ideally I would like to have one GEM screen with both mics effecting the single GEM. Is this possible, or am I stuck with two screens.

i don't know anything about microphones, but i think you'll definitely have to read up and find out how to record tiny sounds without getting too much background noise. first idea that popped into my head was that you might try to find a nice soundproofed box, and then put something insde that box with a good microphone.
i often see on those nature documentaries when they'll have a close up of a caterpillar eating a leaf or something, and the sound is the caterpillar chewing....but i'm not sure if those are actual recordings, or just sound effects added later to the video.
the standard visual part of pd is called GEM. it comes 'pre-installed' in pd-extended, which you shoudl download from here if you don't have it already: http://at.or.at/hans/pd/installers.html
just thinking more about that idea with the box....it would probably be quite easy to make one for yourself. just get an ordinary polystyrene box...like the ones they put fish or vegetables in...and then put a few more layers of old material or foam around it to make it really soundproof.
if you don't do something like that, then your microphone is just going to pick up the ambient sounds of the room, which i don't think is what you want.
the other thing i just thought of is you could use something like a stethoscope..you know..the thing your doctor listens with.

Pitch recognition in puredata through microphone
Hi. I'm in a project where I have a guitar, connected to a microphone. I have this microphone and I want it to input signals from my guitar into pure data, triggering a sound (I have a bonk example, which creates this), but I'd like to implement my own wav-files, triggered depending on the pitch/note of my guitar. So, how do I do this? Please explain from baby level because I just started using this program. I used MAX MSP before.
I would like to know how to make puredata output wav-files (and also from Reaktor if its possible), depending on what sound my guitar inputs in my microphone, so thaaaanks for the help!!!!!!!
Help dividing a frequency into x-number of ranges
all the ibook has is a cheap (but very sensitive) microphone to the right of the monitor behind a pinhole. there's no way to turn off its input; it's obviously meant to be used for voice control of the operating system. hopefully, soundflower (i know that jack will, whenever it's released) will cut it out, because if i want to play music through this, the ultra sensitive microphone picks up on every barely audible ambient sound you can imagine and plays back the frequency. fiddle's amplitude filter is sorely inadequate.
i'm just going to have to buy an imic when i get some cash. and then a real microphone. and then...

Yeah, it's the tough part of the digital realm. You have to take all these factors that are so easy to produce in the real world (ie put a mic close to it's reciever) and seperate them into discreet components that we can work with. So what we have:
The comb filter set up by the mic's proximity to the reciever. The distance is constantly changing, and since v=f(lamda), then the feedback coefficient and the delay time need to have miniscule variation. if you use vd~ rather than delread~ , you can add noise~ (*~ a small value) to your sig~ and get a comb filter that mimics the realworld elements.

sorry rcoco....i didn't realise that you were looking for something so "genuine" in its sound.
maybe read up on the larson effect, and figure out what the main components are, and then add those components to your patch.
i doubt that someone has already written an external for this, but i think there might be some vst plugins that can make a fairly good feedback sound. can you use vst~ with your computer though? i can't cos i'm on a mac. ...i wish someone would hurry up and port the vst~ object to work here.

i'm looking for a free solution too. i don't think my original idea is going to work out because i don't have the time to implement it. maybe some of you have ideas for the problem i am trying to solve.

i am helping a professor with some research. for his research he is doing a case study on 3 composers. he is asking them to record a narrative of there thoughts on the composition process as they compose. for this, the composers will be working an a mac studio workstation putting the composition together in logic. a second computer, a pc , running audacity will be used to record there sounds. when the composer reaches what they consider a significant change in the program, we are asking them to save their project to a new file (so we end up with a series of files showing the various stages of the composition). we would like a way, however, to map the timestamps of those files to the 'timeline' of their narrative.
here are a few solutions that are not exactly desirable:
a. do not stop the recording at all and make a note of what time the recording started. this means that you can calculate what time speech is taking place by adding the number of minutes and seconds (and hours) to the time at which the recording started. the problem with this is that it will yield very large files which are not very practical, especially considering that we have to transcribe these files.
b. have the composers start each segment of narration with a timestamp: "it is now 9:15 on tuesday...." as part of the research methodology, this creates problems with the flow of a more natural narrative of the compositional process.
c. have the composers save each segment of narration as a seperate time-stamped file. the problem here is that this takes more time, and could create a lot of files that would be very annoying to work with when it comes to transcribing.
c. my idea was to have, instead of just input from the microphone, 2 streams of audio input,one on the left channel and one on the right channel. on the left, would be the recorded narrative. on the right, would be an audio signal that encodes a time stamp. i was think of simply convert a number such as DDMMHHMM (day, month, hour, minute) into DTMF tones. these could then be translated back into a timestamp. an 8-tone dtmf sequence would be generated every 10 seconds or so. this way, as long as the narrative segment was longer than 10 seconds, it would contain a timestamp. the problem with this is that i have no way to mix such a signal with the input from the microphone.
