Running patch in the background (ascii to midi) to control Mainstage
Hello,
Brand new to Pd (just today) and was able to create an ASCII to midi convertor patch that allow me to trigger Apple's Mainstage from a wireless USB keypad.
And guess what, it worked (after a couple of hours messin' w/ it).
I actually have two small issues that would make this work better and hoping you might be able to help.
1. Due to the patch grabbing ASCII values from keypad, I need to have the patch as the forground application. Not a big deal because I can minimize the window and put it in the corner of the screen and still see/interact w/ Mainstage.
My question: Is there a way to have the patch in the background and still be capturing the ASCII keypad input?
2. I will be doing more research learning about Pd but thus far I could not find an object that would allow me to send anything other than noteout values. Mainstage does not accept note on/off values to control parameters (at least not in my test) but did accept midi data values after I sent the note on midi data through a midi filter program (midipipe for mac) and grabbed that value in Mainstage. I would like to eliminate running an additional program if I could.
My question: Can you suggest an object that will take the ASCII value and convert it other kinds of midi out value within Pd?
Thanks so much and I look forward to many more projects w/ Pd

MAKE ART 2009 - What The Fork?!
distributed and open practices in FLOSS art
--
CALL FOR PROJECTS
--
make art is an international festival dedicated to the integration of
Free/Libre/Open Source Software (FLOSS) in digital art.
The fourth edition of make art -- What The Fork?! distributed and open
practices in FLOSS art - will take place in Poitiers (FR), from the 7th
to the 13th of December 2009.
make art offers performances, presentations, workshops and an
exhibition, focused on the encounter between digital art and free
software.
We're currently seeking new, innovative FLOSS works and projects: music
and audiovisual performances, presentations, software demos, and
installations.
This year make art focuses on distributed and open practices in FLOSS
art. 'What the fork?!' is about decentralisation. Forking is the new
black. Forking, copying the source code of a project and continuing
work on the copy instead of the original, used to have a bad reputation.
It would split a project and its developer community in pieces, leading
to different, often incompatible, projects. Wasted effort, rivalry and
developer fights were all associated concepts. This is history. Forking
a project with the intention to compete with it is another story, but
the freedom to fork enables quick implementation of features and
customization, bypassing acquiring committer status, bugfix or feature
request protocol, working in a distributed way, together with others but
not necessarily towards one goal, working from one source,
cross-fertilising, inspiring, copying, patching, improving,
experimenting, changing direction, and merging. This practice is boosted
by decentralised software development tools, such as Darcs, Mercurial
and Git. It's not about quick hacks, but about creating room to
experiment, letting go of the one working copy and creating a
multiplicity of ideas.
Deadline : 15th of July 2009.

CALL FOR ARTISTS, COMPOSERS, and PRESENTERS
Submission Deadline: 11:59pm PST, October 31, 2008 (postmarked)
The University of Minnesota West Bank Arts Quarter and Collaborative Arts Program (COLA) are proud to present the 2009 Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts, February 17-22. The festival will be held on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota (USA) and neighboring Minneapolis performing arts venues, and will feature numerous guest artists to be announced.
Now in its seventh year, the Spark Festival showcases the groundbreaking works of music, art, theater, and dance that feature use of new technologies. Last year's festival included innovative works by over one hundred international composers and artists, including featured guest artists Paul Demarinis, Graffiti Research Lab, Iancu Dumitrescu, and Richard Devine. Leading scholars and technology specialists also presented lectures and panels relating to new technology and creativity. Audiences for the concerts, installations, and lectures last year totaled approximately 4,000 people and garnered multiple articles and reviews in local and national media.
Spark invites submissions of art, dance, theater, and music works incorporating new media, including electroacoustic concert music, experimental electronica, theatrical and dance works, installations, kinetic sculpture, artbots, video, and other non-traditional genres. Although Spark does not force submissions to adhere to a annual theme, we are especially interested this year to feature wearable and mobile technologies, and events will include the first Spark Fashion Show.
Spark also invites submission of scholarly lectures and panel proposals on topics of Collaborative Arts, Interactivity, Cognition, Compositional and Artistic Process, Social and Ethical Issues in the Arts, Art, Music, Video, Film, Animation, Theater, Dance, Innovative Use of Technology in Education, Scientific Visualization, Virtual Reality, intermedia composition, performance, human-computer interaction, software/hardware development, aesthetics, and history and all topics related to the creation of new media art and music. For Spark 2009, we are particularly interested in lectures about wearable and mobile technologies, but submissions on any of the above topics are welcome. All accepted papers will be published as part of the Spark proceedings. Please see http://www.spark.cla.umn.edu/media.html for PDF copies of the Spark 2006, 2007, and 2008 proceedings and program.

Hex \> ascii \> hex \> ascii
hi all
i have a micronctroller sending bytes to the serial port for pd. if i need to read a 3 and a 0 from it for example, it will send '30' as one byte. pd converts this to ascii and gives me 48.
i am not familiar with bit twiddling but tried looking up an ascii to hex conversion table and using the ascii equivalents as the objects supposedly convert to and from hex. so for example i 'anded' 48 with 15 (the eqivalent of 'OF') in the hope it would mask the higher 4 bits and just give me the ascii equivalent of 3 but all i got was 0.
any advice on how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated
cheers, rene.
