yahoom, to convert it you will need your patch as a text file, not binary encoded.
I couldn't open it in Pd so far.

For beginning PD has a nice help browser (command + where you can find useful tutorials in learning order. And the support through its huge community is one of the best you can have. So I think to start programming sounds PD is a good choise.
The learned way of programming in PD you can adopt to other languages later as well.
