    Pd people,

I'm looking to make an audio degrader plugin. Is there some way to degrade a signal in realtime so it sounds like a low quality MP3? Thanks.

Hey folks. I'm sending myself back to synthesis school, so I'm working on a really simple bass drum patch.

I'm interested in how different envelope curves will change the attack and decay of the sound. I know that somehow, exponents will be involved, or perhaps trig functions, but I really have no idea how to get those nice, even, convex and concave curves that I've seen in commercial softsynths. I'm visualizing a curve that looks like one quadrant of a circle. How do I do this?

Hey everyone. I have determined that my iac bus is giving too much jitter to my midi signals as I send them from Pd to my daw and such. Is there any way to create midi ports in logic that can be recognized by other software (battery, reaktor, logic)? I'm about to try out midipipe, but I wanted to run this by you guys.

    Thanks.

I want my arrays to have possible y-values between 0 and 3. However, whenever I reopen my patch, it's back to 1 to -1. What gives?

The title says it all. These are three-stage toggles. I might try for four- or five- or twelve-stage toggles at some point. Above a certain number, I'd wanna use the labels to indicate the stage of each one. I just thought of that idea. I will upload the more-complete sequencer whenever it passes another significant milestone.

    I love feedback and suggestions.

I like Logic for many reasons. Sometimes I like that the sequencer is totally regular and orderly and normal. Sometimes I don't. I can do all kinds of awesome things with sequencers in Pd, like making sequencer patches with individual lanes that run at independent rates, for example. So I'm setting out to design a big improvisatory sequencer patch that includes drums, synths, samples, and loop-based recording. It will be totally awesome.

So designing sequencers and using vintage drum machine samples has got me thinking. I've read a handful of interviews with hiphop and techno producers who swear by hardware sequencers and drumboxes. They particularly tend to talk about the "feel" of particular sequencer or drumbox. I get that I won't really be able to replicate the metal frame of a LinnDrum in Pd, that there's something about the buttons, the knobs, the hardware-ness of these machines that encourages a certain style of composition unique to each box.

Given that I'm accepting certain limitations in GUI with any sequencer I design in Pd, how can I effectively create a sequencer that has a unique feel? And then, how can I create another one, with another unique feel? And on and on.

I also understand that certain sequencers, apart from the compositional elements of their front panels, also "color" their rhythmic outputs by leading or delaying the notes in a pleasing manner. Are there schematics somewhere that indicate how this occurs, per individual sequencer?

Also, an appeal to y'all imaginations. Who has cool ideas for sequencers? How can we flavor our sequencers uniquely so they aren't just spitting out Logic-esque, highly regulated streams of notes?

    You guys are awesome!

PS - Best believe I am working on weirding up Logic's sequencer from within!

I'm making a drum sequencer (yay). Is there any advantage to using [metro] versus [phasor~]? How many ways are there to make a time-based counter? Why are some of them better than others? Is one able to achieve a better sync than another? I'm interested in creative solutions that make for more interesting possibilities in sound, you know what I'm saying?

Hey guys. I'm working on making a patch to enable me to key in midi notes and have my pd synth modules behave as monosynths with legato/retrigger. I am sort of smacking my head against the problem. Someone must have done this, right?

hey hardoff. i've been using your diy-2 patch to cobble together interesting instruments, and i've been using both 808_global and 808_globaltext to save my states. trouble is, i'm losing my data when i close pd and reopen. i look in the pd_savedata and it only lists data for the objects that i modified the previous session, not all of the objects in the patch. this is the case for both global and globaltext. a bit frustrating!

love the diy-2 patch, by the by.

Hey people I'm working on creating my own samples with Logic synths and maybe some Pd programming. Kicks seem easy enough, but boy do I have a tough time with snares! I'm looking for two things:

    1. I seem to recall some sort of pdf manual on the principles of drum synthesis, and I'm not finding it. Anyone know where this is?

    2. How do y'all synthesize your snares?

I'm listening to a lot of Autechre here, as they represent (to me) the masterclass on synth drums. Thanks for helping me on my quest toward snappin', idiosyncratic rhythm tracks!

I've got a pretty functional electric-bass-to-MIDI-note patch going (with velocity!), and even with MIDIPipe insead of IAC the latency between Puredata and Reaktor is a huge burn. So I'm asking for recommendations on a synth patches. Got a good one?

I'm working in OSX, and I'd like to use fiddle~ to output MIDI notes to Logic and Reaktor using an IAC bus. I've lost all my work since I last approached this project, so I can't even remember how I was going about it.

Ideally, I'd like fiddle~ to receive input from my electric bass or microphone and convert either signal into discrete MIDI notes. I'll basically be limited to the highest couple of strings, which is fine. It would be fantastic if I could somehow transmit the pure pitch of a performance (with bends and microtones) to my softsynths. I haven't fully investigated the possibilities for micro-tones in Reaktor, and I'm fairly certain that Logic will only recognize integers as MIDI note messages. Maybe with Logic I could simply use the output of fiddle~ to influence the semitone and cent knobs of a particular synth while sending the same MIDI note with each noteon.

In any case, I'm interested in everyone's ideas on this patch. If you know how I might make this happen from a technical position, or if you have any feature suggestions, speak up!

I'm working on a looping sampler (hey hey), and I want to create soundfiles of loops that I choose. I'm going to be creating a lot of files, and I need to generate unique names for each file without having to type it (boring). How can I piece together unique arguments for the 'open' message sent to writesf~ each time I prompt it to record?

Pd gives me the above warning whenever I save my sampler project. Yes, there are several 441003-point arrays in the patch. Why is that noteworthy?

I'm putting together a wavetable snare generator, and I want to be able to mouse over my array to draw a 64-point amp envelope for this snare. Same with frequency and various other parameters. I'd like to control them all with tables. However, mousing over tables is a huge pain. There's got to be an easier way, right? I'd use 64 vsliders, but then I can't draw a line across them all. Any suggestions?

I'm currently working on a realtime sampler in Pd that lets me snatch bits of audio from stereo tracks in Logic and then trigger them as samples. I've got Pd recording audio from Logic into arrays using tabwrite~. So far so good. Then, I've got a line object feeding into tabread4~ to play back the samples from the arrays. I'm triggering the line object with the list "44100 1000" which should, unless I'm missing something, count up through 44100 samples in one second.

The line object will play through the sample, but the beginning sounds like a turntable being turned on with the needle down. In other words, it starts at a lower pitch, and bends up to the actual pitch of the sample. I'm going to poke around in the audio examples, though I'm still interested in your insights. Thanks!

I created "ion_router", because I wanted to be able to control and automate any parameter on my ION from any source. This abstraction takes values 0 through 1 and scales them to control any feature of the ION available to NRPN messages.

My next project is a Pd abstraction that will scale data from any knob, any fader, any source of automation to 0 through 1 for use with "ion_router". I'm ultimately hoping to create a sort of modular patcher environment in Pd that'll let me route control data between Logic, Reaktor, IanniX, Ardour, Live, and all my hardware.

(It's too late for me to seem as psyched as I really am about this.)

Comments on my mission, or the abs itself are appreciated. Thanks!

Hello. I'm very very new at Pd, trying to create NRPN converters to use Alesis ION as MIDI controller in Logic. I'm also interested in general MIDI control of Logic using Pd. I can send MIDI info to my audio interface (M-Audio Firewire 410), but I'm not sure how to get Logic to pick up on MIDI sent from Pd without cabling together the MIDI-In and MIDI-Out on the 410.

    Any ideas?
