I've seen a few images of pd patches which have curved connection cables like in Max. Does anyone know how i can get this?

Yes, it's a different distribution of Pd called Pd-l2Ork (it's not pd-extended nor vanilla). Currently it's available only for Linux. See: http://l2ork.music.vt.edu/main/?page_id=56

Not really. The thing is Pd-l2Ork installs 2 programs, one is the traditional Pd, the other is called Pd-l2Ork K12 which was created for educational purposes (and that's the screenshot in that website).
