A really extra simple music tutorial for complete beginners. Make a 4 track sequencer that only uses selects and messages. As it's for a workshop there's a pdf you can grab, which may be updated with acrobat links at some point.

very nice indeed! I think you addressed the PD composition
topics quite well, this is a quite nice reference for beginners.
(anyway I think that some "difficulties" of composing in PD
become evident when you are not limited to few beats but
when you try to make a structured piece - or at least this my difficulty..).
I also like the idea of making a single pdf file of the tutorial..
What about the PD tutorial book?

Cheers Alberto, hopefully Composition 2 or 3 will deal with building larger structures, you're
right that's a big leap from simple lists to proper compostions, not sure how best to
do that. Introduce abstractions and list operations next I think...

Tis coming along, quite an undertaking to write a book and do it to high standard. I'm spending a lot more time learning TeX than Pd at the moment Publishers are a world of misery though, textbooks aren't what they want, so I'll most likely finance the whole thing myself and put it straight to Amazon. I got a load of kind help from Steve Smith who wrote "DSP for scientists and engineers" and he published his own work - then sold 20,000 copies Pd is a lot more niche so it's a labor of love and faith really, the publishers all want to sell books on Protools, but I keep telling them Protools is a $1000 piece of software that comes with a shelf full of fine manuals:) There's a lot of work doing
stuff like going through examples to make sure they match perfectly with what is to go on the CD/download pack, and I'm learning new TeX/pdf skills so I can crossreference and link audio and .pd file examples into the text, nice. Anyway, will get there I promise, possibly by this Autumn.

Just in case, if you need some help with Latex (are you writing in LaTeX, right, not
in plain TeX? This is for masochists maybe I can provide some help (templates etc.)

Cheers peeps, I'm glad they're useful and it's a big up to hear feedback. The 'diagram is the program' idea works, it goes across langauge. Some guys translated to Spanish and Portuguese which makes me feel good. I'm not sure where these fit in the wiki structure but the wiki building activity and language access for pd users in dozens of langauges is pretty exciting. . Could you just mirror the html in the right place?

@Hardoff, did you find a place for tutorials in pd-wiki yet? I understand what Hans said, but can't seem to find what I want , the part that isn't "what is a [thing]?" but "How do you...?" What do you do about attaching snapshots and example files to html, or are you using all ascii diags, or is the whole point that all the content *IS* pd files, so tutorials should always be pd files... I don't pay attention to the wiki threads on the list, sorry if its old

POD for definite dubtub, then I sort out an ISBN and Amazon it. "This Autmn" ...I know I'm slippin I didn't realise there's so much to typesetting or how hard it is to make a textbook, but I'm being really serious and working at some every day. Thanks for the ideas on a manufacturer .

Alberto, I joined tex-hacks list - the package I chose is memoir (but i'm still working with ordinary book class) and using side captioning for pd diagrams (lots of them). It works fine so far, but I might have to email you to pick your brains sometime:) I think I've mastered floats and can get diagrams where I want, and now have a proper build script that uses gnuplot to grab graphs etc. Do you know anything about pstricks or any other tricks that might be good for pd diagrams?

I used a bit the "graphicx" package in the past. Attached is a short tutorial
for "better handling" .eps or .ps figures. Stretching, changing "bounding boxes",
scaling etc.. Maybe helpful, maybe not.
