I am new to PD, just started taking a Sound Synth class on it and I am struggling a bit.

For a project, I wanted to make a basic synth that would manipulate my voice in realtime as I played notes on a midi keyboard. So far this is what I have but it doesn't work how I wanted it to.
I posted in here before, but I had a trouble understand the replies. If anyone could tell me what I am missing it would be awesome, help is much appreciated.

Hi,

I had a quick look on your patch and I spotted some serious problems with it:

• when sending a signal, do not use [s] and [r], but rather [s~] and [r~]

• I don't understand what you mean by [r delwrite~ mydelay 1000], but I guess you want this:

  [r~ delay]
  |
  [delwrite~ mydelay 1000]
  

• on my computer, your abstraction [chord] is not being loaded, but rather one of pd-extended default objects which is also named chord. I suggest you change the name of your abstraction to something else, like [myChord]

• talking of which: why are you using a [mtof] before this chord abstraction, when inside of it you once again use three [mtof] before the [phasor~]'s? I guess you should remove it from the main patch, just connect the [notein] directly to [myChord].

• what is the second inlet of chord.pd doing? I don't understand why you are using it since its value shoudl come from the first inlet via the [unpack 0 0 0]

@gsagostinho Hi thanks for your suggestions, I've changed my post to a zip folder that also contains my chord abstraction so that will come up.

I will remove the mtof from the main patch, that was definitely an oversight. The second inlet of chord also seems unnecessary, I will remove it.

If you wouldn't mind taking a look at the second draft, I would really appreciate it. It is able to synthesize my voice, but I can't get it to change pitch using my midi keyboard. I am using 3 separate phasor~ objects at different frequencies, because I saw another vocoder patch doing so, but I don't really understand why. I tried replacing them with osc~ but that didn't work either.

I will take a look a the Porres examples again as well, thanks!

I can have a look on your patch some other time if you don't mind, today I am very busy. But as far as I know, a vocoder algorithm is much more complex than a simple ring modulation, and you can't expect to get those cool effects like the ones used by Kraftwerk and Daft Punk by using the latter (and that is what you are using on your patch). Most vocoder algorithms I have seen use some form of FFT analysis, and this is something more advanced than simple AM and FM modulations. Have a look on those Porres's examples, he has some really cool ones about vocoders (and to be honest, I am promising to study these algorithms in depth myself for long time since I do not understand the theory well at all).
