A bang is just a simple data type that means "do it". Many objects can do several different things if you give them different messages, but a bang is a simple type that's meant to trigger the main function of the object (unless the main function requires another type). I guess it's not as complicated as other types, so it might have small computational advantages than using floats or symbols.
