Pd disables media players on ubuntu 10.10

Yes, these are the joys of Pulse Audio. Unfortunately, I never found an easy way around this problem and since Ubuntu have, pretty outrageously, deprecated OSS emulation at the kernel level, things aren't going to get much better.
One solution may be to run all of your applications through the Jack server but I am not experienced enough to guide you through that. I'm sure someone else will be able to help.

I disabled PulseAudio in a machine that runs Ubuntu by commenting all the lines in the PulseAudio starting scripts called during startup. Then, without PulseAudio pestering around, you can start jack and run Pd and every other audio apps smoothly as jack clients.
You may look inside /etc/rc#.d , where # are numbers from 0 to 6 and see which scripts are called during boot, and then modify them. That may have not been the best solution but at least worked just fine. Remember that, as far as I know, PulseAudio makes Jack impossible to work. I hope that this PA issue is solved by now or at least is being corrected.

any clue?
the radio sucks so much... -
I remember there were at least four scripts that were called from init.d that I had to comment out. Unfortunately, it was on the machine that I use at work, since I'm on vacations until february I cannot tell you exactly which were them.
Hope you work it out soon, sonsofsol.Debian Stretch on Lenovo T450i, Lexicon Omega.

I use pulse-jack from falkTX ppa but this is for ubuntu Lucid only, or a music player that can use jack like Aqualung.

after installing ubuntu-studio-audio
i got jack running, but pd still stops totem and co.i installed aqualung and this one works! thx excalibur!
what i still miss is get the sream from aqualung in pd for sound analysis
-
thx to all....its solved!
-
How did you solve it?
(I am opened similar thread, maybe you can post there?) -
im afraid i dont really know why it works for me now, but i think installing ubuntu studio audio was the solution.
i got other errors than you when running jackd, though. -
I implemented this instructions (routed browser audio to jack as a pulse audio).
All went fine. But pure data still disables the sound when I play music in the browser.
Any clues?
