Hopefully the title isn't too unclear, wasn't sure of the best way to describe this in a line.

Basically what I want to know is if there is a way to give PD start up arguments or messages and have these used as abstraction arguments.

I'm specifically wanting to use this so I can have a net receive with a variable for the port and then control what port it is listening on by giving PD a different value as it starts up.

This is so I can start up multiple copies of PD and then control them independently.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, you can have as many creation arguments as you want. Inside the abstraction just read the out with $n ($1 = first argument, $2=second argument,...). However, note that these $1 variables aren't of the same kind as used inside a message.

sorry, I don't think I explained it so well. I understand about how to use arguments in abstractions, but i want to find out if there is a way of having arguments for pure data itself.

so if i have a patch with an int object inside it with a $1 argument then i could (for example, i know it doesnt work like this) start up PD with

pd -open "patch name" -args 1

and then that int would contain the value 1

or, for my purposes, have a netreceive object with a $1 and then give pd the port i want it to listen on as a startup argument

someone on the IRC room just pointed out the maxlib/netclient and netserver objects to me which look like they'll fulfil what i'm after.

I'll report back with more info once i've had a chance to test them
