libpd has reached a 0.1 release, enabling developers to use Pd as a sound engine in their applications. Out of the gate, we have extensive code samples for Android 1.5 and later, plus the basic tools to work on iOS (recent armv7 recommended for now, with other devices soon). In the near future, embedding Pd patches inside tools like Processing/Java, OpenFrameworks/C++, and Python should be just as easy. The library is based on Pd vanilla, so this is not a fork of Pd; you can use patches in it just as you would in any other version.

Developers will find the library, code snippets (for Android; iOS is coming), and even some handy abstractions:

I'm not a programmer for a long time now, but I suppose that with pdlib and VST API, one could use Pd for prototyping, and then easily implement a cross-platform VST plugin, by making a GUI in C and using the actual patch from the prototype, right?

WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE FREAKING OUT ABOUT THIS??? Pd has a powerful engine for manipulation of audio and creation of new sounds from scratch. I would assume that those two things are what attracted people to Pd in the first place. libpd allows for sale or exposure of your creations as well as full integration into applications such as games. Your creative efforts now have potential for a purpose other than impressing other Pd users who already have Pd downloaded. Libpd will help you make something meaningful with them!!

I'm surprised as well. Maybe it's because this forum is populated more by artists and less by developers - at least that's my impression reading it for some time. I just did a search, pdlib is not mentioned on the KVR DSP sub-forum - an announcement there could be of greater importance.....
BTW, I consider pdlib + JUCE a no-brainer in developing both open-source and commercial plugins and standalone apps.

Well as you mentionned I'm pretty interested in libpd but I'm an artist and I lack of knowledge in development, so when it comes to libpd I use the ScenePlayer, or pd-webkit or droid-party.
I would like to learn how to build a custom gui in another language for my patchs and run them on my phone with nice GUIs.
JUCE seems a nice tool. If you have some time I'm sure that a tutorial showing how to combine JUCE and libpd will interest people in this forum and at the pd-everywhere group (or at least me).
For me the difficulty comes to find a simple way to start, choose a language, a set of tools ... in fact i'm still looking for a way to proceed with libpd.

Hey, I'm sorry if I sounded like I have a clue! I've never built a single app using either JUCE or libpd I am an ex-programmer though, and having contemplated and investigated the two, I'm pretty sure it's possible. Let me explain why this particular combo suits me....
For now, I'm prototyping a plug-in in Pd, and I feel that using the same patch in the end-product will be fine since I don't care about CPU usage, so I'm not interested in re-implementing it in C++. Both Pd and JUCE can be used for GPL-ed and closed source stuff, and the combo makes it instantly cross-platform (Win/Lnx/OSX and VST/RTAS/AU/LADSPA).

I know I sound like a jerk saying thing, but I think people are not excited because this forum is populated by highly skilled "programmer artists." I fall victim to this too. There is a certain balance that I wish we all had. Whenever I mention standard "musical" features for Pd patches like legato voicing, no one is interested. Likewise (and perhaps admirably) Pd users are not ravenous to sell their synth creations. I want to share what I make to non Pd users/create something that might be desirable for profit/make my own music with Pd. I really hope this libpd lifts us all out of patcher obsession into the real world of music.

BTW...is anyone out there working on a non-GNU expr/expr~? I am totally cool dispensing with [expr] but for audio-rate conditional logic I am clueless, and [expr~] has had a crucial role in my work so far.

Also to put things in perspective, think about the other options: Synthedit is okay I guess... I wouldn't really know. But it's Windows only and that's quite limiting. Sonicbirth is/was the the MacOS equivalent but as far as I know it's been abandoned in it's current highly buggy state. Reaktor lets you open your creations in Reaktor so that's hardly mentionable unless you want to work for NI or only want to deal with Reaktor owners. Max/MSP tried to be mobile with Pluggo, without giving up it's ownership their (actually Miller Puckette's) work but gave up and are now permanently housed inside Ableton Live's sequencer. Puredata continues to be free of cost and free of most restrictions yet extremely powerful. Now it is more mobile as well. GET EXCITED NOW!

People, wouldn't a free, all-platform, open-source, Pd-based replacement for synthedit and reaktor be a killer app?

It could attract some very serious developers to Pd.

I am looking for a way to integrate PD in my Nokia 5230, Symbian Phone. I want to communicate to my Computer via bluetooth. I tried to program it with symbians qt but didn't get very far. Can libpd help me? Or even better, did anybody do this before?

I am no expert but there has got to be a way. Just hang on.

Quite frankly, I am pissed at the Pd fanbase. Maybe if it cost a pretty penny people would be more exited about libpd? Anyway...

Is there any hope for me of a Vsti/AU/app/exe builder complete with GUI options? If a GUI builder is not in the cards should I look for/rile up some personages who are capable of making a builder?

libpd is plain C, so that part should be easy to build for Symbian. Then you just need to write the audio I/O to make libpd input/output audio to Symbian, and you'll have libpd on Symbian!

The best way to predict the future is to invent it. I don't use plugins really at all, so I don't follow that stuff.

That's a shame, to be honest. I don't use plugins either but most people do. I have non-nerds that I work with musically who I would really like to share various Pd tools with. I heard about the libpd project and selfishly hoped it and you would help do my bidding. I gave up and switched to using Reaktor's "Core" which definitely proved to be on par with Pd in terms of flexibility and power but did not afford me any new ways of sharing unless we ALL buy Reaktor. Rats! Back to ye olde Pd. I think maybe I just need to get my head out of DSP and finally learn the nuts and bolts of C++ coding properly like you have eluded too. How right you are.

I don't like how people can't see how usefull this software it takes a lot of drain power to use I use pd in my work one day I was showing off my work to my friend and I was exlaning how my it all works and all he could show me was his lame fx on his iPad and he said some think like there is no new effects out there or no one will like your ideas. I say new type of effect will be invented as long as there in math involved. As a developer i would not I could not sale some one junk
People are to commercialized and just look a GUI/skin to much and say to them self... I need that how much $.
yes it would nice to have pd to look better with good GUIs I am all for it ! but focus on how you can make pd better and answer some of the peoples request

I think it would be great if Pd supported plugins well, but I'm not the person to do it. Think of it from my perspective: I don't get paid to work on Pd, I use it in my own work and I work on it for fun. I don't use or know VST, etc. plugins, and Pd can do everything that the plugins can. So why would I spend lots of time learning all that plugin stuff? I'd rather see it done in Pd, personally.

The best implementation is going to come from someone who knows the area well and wants to use it themselves. Scratch their own itch.

Pd can do everything that the plugins can do I am using pd more because it is more creative I like it because its hard ,experimental, more creative I am learning how to use it I real wish I had some thing like this when I first started to make music (i did not know about it ) I real don't have the need buy vst its pointless unless its software like Rx Repair/ audio restoration software
now that I have pd and some knowledge of DSP it real pointed out all of the junk vst out there when you can make some thing like in pd way better and pass normal and pass freak and uncommon . I wont to leave people breathless when I do a live show I won't them to scratch there on heads and say how did he do that? he dose not sound like any other artist. what's his secret?
