Noob question here. Does the DAC object represent the soundcard? Or is it an actual piece of software that then sends the processed data to the soundcard?

It represents the soundcard, and, depending on the number of outputs set in the Prefs you can create [dac~ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8] which creates outputs for each of your hardware's outputs
