The alternative to the metro-based looper is the phasor-based. Basically:

I like this method because it's 'seamless' and the period (and pitch) are malleable. Also, you can 'waveshape' the initial index (the phasor~) and get some really weird rhythmic backwards/forwards/jittery stuff.

To achieve seamless looping of course a ms-time-base can't be sufficient.
But I think there are other functions in PD to use a sample-count time base for the same purpose.
