I have pure data and a python script running on my raspberry pi. I'm using Socket and a TCP connection to send a value from python every 10 seconds into Pure data via a netreceive object. (the value changes every now and then)

The issue i'm having is that each time the script repeats (in a thread) it opens a new connection in Pure data and doesn't seem to close the old one. When it gets to a certain number of open connections it no longer receives the right value.

I'm a bit of a beginner/copy+paster on Python (and pure data) so am struggling to figure out which side of this equation needs sorting out.

I made this for my RP3 and never had this problem, maybe try looking at it or using it, it uses 5 GPIOS and send bangs, but you can make it to send a complex message

So in your netreceive example you have it as a UDP (datagram) connection and not TCP (stream). would that prevent multiple connections being opened?

If so I think I also need to tweek the python script.

@offtandiscord It doesn't matter whether its tcp or udp. It is most likely that the Python script is repeatedly opening a socket, with the "open socket" command within the 10 second "data send" loop when it needs to be outside. Udp is probably better, as the sender does not care if the message is received (there is no "callback" confirmation and so no request for a resend) and the receiver is not held up by errors.
It could be that the "open socket" command chosen in Python automatically closes the socket once a complete message is sent...... which you would need to change...
I am lower than a Python Noob......... this is just stuff I have come across looking at other problems.

I think it doesn't really matter the protocol, but the message you're trying to send, anyway, in the script i previously posted, you can replace the a, b, c, d or e variables, and send different messages, i never was able to use TCP, but this worked for me, maybe if you explain us in detail the message you are trying to send it would be useful,

I think i've sorted the issue!

A lot had to do with my python script constantly opening another connection, so I learnt what the hell multi-threading is all about and sorted that part of the issue. My next step was to have PD run a sequence 8 times then stop and wait until the value received from netreceive was different, which I've just managed.

If people are interested, this project takes data from my twitter stream and converts it into midi-sends for a DADAmachines automat kit, which essentially turns it into a twitter-controlled drumkit. This is I think the 5th variation of this instrument i've come up with!

How would you make it for receiving messages from puredata in python? I use the same function as you to send messages from python to puredata, but I'm having issues for making the pdreceive function in python.

I ran into the same problem with multiple open socket connections, eventually crashing Pd. I read about multi-threading, but I don't really see how this solves the problem. What was your final solution? You still using TCP?
