Working no windows and linux both
Hello again,
I use both Windows 2000 and Ubuntu 8.10. I have installed pd 0.40.3 on both. They both work well, but I found it strange when I open on Ubuntu a Puredata file I created on Windows, it sounds as it should, but it doesn't look good. Everything is messed up, objects overlay each other, their font is extremely big, I cannot found myself in this. When I return to Windows, everything is back okay.
I reckon it happens because the objects are drawn on Ubuntu and on Windows in different way. Is there any way to fix it so I can work on my compositions both on Ubuntu and Windows?
Best Linux for PD?
Hi,
Install Feisty, using alternative - 7.04 worked great for me. Install the studio, test the slow kernel first on your machine - try the optimised later, if all goes well.
(I tried an update to 7.10, and to optimise on my 386mhz 256mb hp portable, and it really slowed things down! I have looked into RAM - the upgrade is worth it if you live in the US - 90 dollars, and you'll have your 1 gig of RAM -2 512 bars - it will make a huge difference!!)
Hands down, for simplicity, use Hans' extended-PD for Ubuntu. Working better than ever, and fun to see how much works compared to 1.4 years ago when I started.
Hans installation works great - if not, Miller's stripped down PD is available through Synaptic, their package manager. (don't forget to first install all the required libraries, which might all be included in their new Studio version
But don't stop there....
If you nest Dynebolic on Ubuntu, (check nesting on the Dyne site - it really is cool!) you get a very light and easy PD if you copy the pure:dyne modules with it. I have found it to be very fast, but the actual Pure:Dyne CD, unfortunately, did not boot on my elderly beast. So I have been happy to open PD on Dyne:bolic, using a CD to boot into it - taking advantage of the supersmall system, and PD - except that all the extras/libraries in PD, taken from the PureDyne distro, were not functional!!!
Sound familiar - ahh, like two years ago, when half the extended were not working...
But you have Ubuntu extended as a great refernce of proper functioning...
I really do think nesting is a great solution, letting one hack away on a less stable or smaller distro with a larger one. Plus, I can pass patches back and forth.
New forks off this question:
I just need to check if I can just copy Hans extended to Dyne??? Or better suggestions??
How about PD with DSL?
And Has anyone done a powerpc linux nesting on OSX.3 or OSx.4? I have found that Debian's live does boot on powerpc (g4, 1 gig ram), as does ubuntu's. After the speed up I saw with Dyne nesting, I thought - someone much smarter and better at programming than I who doesn't want VM slowdowns has probably developed a nesting solution for linux on mac.
By the way, as a fan of the CREB library for PD, almost all of it is functioing on the Ubuntu distro - great work Hans!!
UBUNTU Pd install libjack0.100.0-0 error
you might check ubuntustudio.org, since those guys are sound on ubuntu 24-7. The problem might be that your pd is looking for a more bleedy edge jackd package than ubuntu has in its base repositories.
this might not be what you want to hear at this point, but I've had real good luck with fedora8, and I was an ubuntu user. on FC8, you've got PlanetCCRMA repos(http://ccrma.stanford.edu/planetccrma/software/) which have the newest jack, PD, and a crap ton of PD extern libraries preconfigured. Fedora's got Yumex, which is similar to the synaptic package manager. FC is a bit more command-liny than ubuntu. YMMV, yknow?

Distro
It seems that the whole "which distro" question has just drastically changed for ppc users, as ubuntu is ceasing it's support for the architecture. Ubuntu seems very popular for it's package management and sexy flavor. What other distros are people using on ppc? Should I go with;
Legacy Ubuntu (3.x? 4.x?)
YDL
Something else.
Obviuously it needs to be running pd at low priority on a stock powerbook and have all types of good driver support, etc.
Also, does anyone know if Ubuntu is making packages and apt-get unavailable for ppc as well?
Community, Puredata compiled for a 64bit environment?
Once Gutsy Gibbon come out (sometime in early October) Ubuntu Studio will be available in 64bit. As of Gutsy Gibbon, all of the packages contained in Ubuntu Studio will be in the official Ubuntu repo, meaning all architectures supported!
At the moment Ubuntu Studio has its own repo for a few programs (ardour, wired) that didnt quite make the official repo in time for Fiesty
be sure to check out the ubuntu studio tutorial blog @ http://www.ubustu.com
What version for Linux?
I can vouch for ubuntu; I run it on my powerbook for live shows. I'm still tied to os x in the "studio" *cough* because of ableton and various vst's etc...
one thing with ubuntu, is that I'm not sure if they offer a low-latency kernel for ppc, so you might have to jump through some hoops and read some forums if you wanna set one up. I never bothered, because the stuff I'm doing is mostly feedback processing anyway; not really dependant on latency ; p
that aside, ubuntu seems to be the most painless to setup. it autodetected most of my hardware, and there's a killer faq on the ubuntu forums for setting up wireless etc. for pd you can use the extended installer that hans puts together http://at.or.at/hans/pd/installers.html. this works really well for me.
one very definite plus from using linux is you can run pd on blackbox and turn everything else off. no dropshadows, no itunes daemons, nothing but pd and a few bare minimum system processes. this is very cool if your powerbook is old and cranky like mine. I can load all my patches at once and it only hits the cpu about 30-40%!
Problems with Hid
if you're willing to jump over to linux (i strongly recommed ubuntu for ease of use) and then puredata comes with linux_joystick and it's family of toys.
using hid- have you tried switching devices using the [open $1( message?

Suse 10.2 x86\_64 Pd issues
Hello there.
I have no news yet that will definitely help. Both Edgy and Feisty have problems with certain combos of hardware and ALSA.
Things I have found out:
Sound on Ubuntu is dodgy and has a lot of bug reports filed.
Daniel T Chen - search for bug reports by him, he is assigned to this in Ubuntu
Also search generally for "Ubuntu no sound". "Ubuntu ALSA"
Use Jack - it is much better than ALSA
I have seen several weird solutions involving things like deleting and recreating the sound group,
moving or recreating asound.conf and/or ~/.asoundrc*, and sacrificing a chicken to the flying spaghetti monster. In other words, no coherent problem definition or solution from Ubuntu users yet.
re-running alsaconf , sudo alsaconf (in sudo ubuntu you sudo must put sudo before sudo everything)

good luck, report back soon
Externals under ubuntu
If you don't know what you're doing, better that you don't point to the Debian repositories, one mistake and you will toast your OS.
But nevermind, after some checking everything is already packaged for Ubuntu, but you must enable the Universe repositories to see them (----> synaptic/apt user manual)

PD on Linux
I just installed PD 0.38.2 on Ubuntu linux, since I'm new to PD I didn't test things like latency but the sound worked.
Ubuntu is quite easy to install, here is what I did:
0. download "ubuntu hoary preview" iso image from www.ubuntu.com and burn it on CD-ROM
1.install ubuntu (follow the on screen instructions)
2.use the ubuntu update tool to update your ubuntu system
3. download puredata from http://packages.debian.org/unstable/sound/puredata for your processor architecture
4. go to the directory where you downloaded the file and type:
dpkg -i puredata_0.38.2+amidi-3_i386.deb (for i386... change for other architectures)
5.in the ubuntu main menu go to "preferences" > "sound" and uncheck the "enable soundserver at startup" checkbox
6. open a terminal and type pd
This works for me... it might work for you (try it!) Please note you should always be carefull before you install a new operating system (like ubuntu) make sure you have proper backups of the important files on your system!
Lech
PS: There also is a PD package in the ubuntu universe (0.37) which can be installed thru the synaptic packetmanager, but it doesn't work for me(exits with segmentation fault)...
