what is the best / correct way to write data to a serial port after it has been opened?

I'm using [comport 9600 2] to open the port and I get a successful message but when I try to write binary in a message box that connects to comport it kinda just hangs.

My end goal is to write to the serial port of an X10 FireCracker CM17A device.
