    Hi there,
I'm quite new to both linux and pd, so I probably missed something quite simple that causes my problem...

I managed to set up Ubuntu Studio on my notebook, using JACK as the audio backend for all applications which support it. For all other applications (e.g. Flash Player in Firefox) I have installed PulseAudio, which is configured to send all it's output to JACK (via PulseAudio JACK Sink).

That way, I can route every sound of my entire system through pd before sending it to the actual soundcard. I'm planning on processing/filtering that audio stream with pd in order to control an active loudspeaker system.

This whole setup works very fine so far - I configured pd to use JACK and everything works as intended.

But here comes the strange thing that I'm experiencing: When I tried to use pd-extended instead of pd, which shouldn't make that great a difference, it somehow messes up my PulseAudio-configuration. pd-extended is also configured to use JACK, so it shouldn't have anything to do with PulseAudio. But if I only start pd-extended, following things happen:

-all audio streams going through PulseAudio are stopped
-all audio streams going directly through JACK keep going just normally
-if I do not close pd-extended within several seconds, the program freezes
-after I close pd-extended (the "normal" way, or, after it has freezed, by killing the process), all PulseAudio streams just continue at the position where they stopped previously

As a newbie, I am quite helpless here - in my opinion, pd-extended shouldn't have to interact with PulseAudio in any way, but apparently, it does... and in quite a strange way I might add ;).

Can anyone give my some clue on how to fix this?
    Thanks in advance

PS: Please excuse any grammatical errors, my English is a bit rusty ;).

    Thanks for your answer.
I tried getting rid of that whole PulseAudio-thing, but then realized, that that's not so easy, as virtually all "normal" applications that do not support JACK natively (for instance Flash Player in Firefox) rely on PulseAudio. When I deactivate it, that all stops working, so that's not an option for me.

But I made a strange discovery: When I directly start the pd-extended executable from /usr/bin everything just works perfectly. All PulseAudio streams keep running, pd-extended appears in JACK and inputs and outputs audio.
However, when I start pd-extended using the shortcut the Ubuntu Software Center put in the sidebar for me, the problem as described above occurs.

This makes absolutely no sense to me, but as long as it works that way, I'm happy...

    Regards
