Has anyone found that they can't use a [device Ndevice( message to choose video devices with [pix_video]?

I can't get it to work - am I being thick? I've been sending [device 0( etc. ('device' + no.), but doesn't really seem to be doing anything - if I want to switch between devices, I've had to use [dialog source( and change there each time.

Hope someone out there knows what I'm missing.

    Dear all,

    Can anyone help..?

I'm trying to get Gem to recognize a different video input, using [pix_video], but I can only get it to take the input from macbook pro's built-in isight cam.. I'm connecting a sony HDR-Z1E, and want to be able to take that picture live into Gem, but I just don't know what message to send [pix_video] to make it happen.

I think it might be something as simple as sending a [device ...< message, but then I don't know where the device is on the mac..

Any advice/help will be massively appreciated.

I'm desperately trying to figure out how to reliably connect my camera to Pd, so that I can use it as a live camera feed, and effect the video in real time. I've been trying to use the [pix_video] object, but haven't got particularly far - video is new territory for me - keep getting error messages 'Could not make new SG channel error -9405' and 'SGIdle failed with error -9402'.

Not sure how to go about this - sometimes it seems to work with built-in cam, sometimes not..

    Any tips?

    Thanks so.

Hi atarikai - thanks for reply.
I've now got a new problem - had a small amount of progress.

I decided that it might be a silly idea using my DSLR, lots of people suggesting that it's tricky and not really what it's meant for. So, I've borrowed a friend's video cam - Sony HVR-Z1e. Have connected it by firewire and can use it with latest version of skype fine. But I still don't know how to select it as a device in Gem. Is it a driver problem? It's just a little beyond me....!

Do you know the steps I should be taking to get it working? I'm using [pix_video] and have looked at the video source using [source dialog( - the camera won't show up.

    Any ideas?

HELP! I can't figure out which driver, or which device.. I know it's connected to computer, because I can change it to default camera in photobooth, and it's listed under firewire devices in system profiler, but I just don't know how to get Pd to recognise it - please help if you can, I'm a tad desperate..!
