    Hi,

I was hoping somebody could give me an idea about using the Pd~ object in Max.

What i'm confused about is basically what it does, and how to get it working! I've tried to follow the steps given in the help file, but it doesn't seem to actually do anything. I can't even tell if the Pd process is running inside Max, nor can i open any patches etc.

Does anybody know how it works?

    Hi,

I noticed when i was setting up my MIDI devices on Pd 0.43.4-extended using a Macbook that if the IAC driver port name was shorter than the phrase 'IAC Driver' then it would append some letters from that name on the end of the device name, causing it to not get recognised as a valid input.

As example, i had a port called 'PD Out' and it was showing up in the Pd MIDI settings dialog as 'PD Outer' or something, the last two letters being the 'er' of IAC Driver. This issue was solved by making my device names longer.

Thought i ought to post it here in case it's a bug or whatever. It probably only applies to Macintosh OSX and the IAC driver settings. USB devices that provide their own name are fine.

With Ableton, make sure that your IAC bus to Pd is set to output sync nessages. Not to be condescending but it's an easy thing to miss/forget to do.

I've found that it works just fine using the exact technique you describe, except for the sync jitter. For some reason Pd actually seems to run ahead of Live's internal clock, it's pretty odd but it works at least.
