Hi,

I'm having an absolute nightmare with a patch - I used to be able to write a file using textfile and read and edit it using msgfile, but now whenever I try to read a file with msgfile the entire programme crashes. I've tried writing with msgfile and it just creates an empty text document so I know it isn't a file extension problem, but perhaps something with msgfile itself. This started when I updated to the latest version of PD.

Has anyone else had this problem, or knows of a working msgfile version for Pd 43.4?

Hi,

Could you share your patch and the text file so we can have a look what is going on? Also, why are you using both [textfile] to write a file when [msgfile] can also do that?

Apologies for the delay in replying. I switched back to the old version of Pd and this now works, but I need the new version for the pyext and portaudio functionality.

Anyway, I've posted a simplified version of the patch, as the original is extremely messy. The file path for the textfile needs to be specified (I've included links to the msgfile object in the patch) and this works in 42.5, but in 43 it just crashes whenever msgfile tries to read it. In fact, msgfile doesn't seem to work at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The process is that a new textfile is written with a series of lines (a new number on each line), then this is opened and the GEM window acts as an XY graph, with pitches (from the Y position) written to specific lines (taken from the Y position) - this is what the [go to] and [append] is used for. then this is read back by msgfile to play the pitches which have been drawn on the screen

However, when I first programmed it, [msgfile] wouldn't write the original text file for some reason, so I used [textfile] to do that and then [msgfile] to open and edit it. Now, with version 43, neither work. Even with the simplest patches (writing a textfile and reading it) [textfile] just writes an empty .txt file, not adding any of the information, and trying to read it with [msgfile] crashes the programme

SOLVED

To anyone who has had this issue, looking at the patch I posted will probably only confuse the issue. The problem is the msgfile.dll file which accompanies the zexy library in Pd 43.4. This file seems to cause Pd to crash without posting any messages.

The solution is simple enough - find the msgfile.dll file in the zexy library for version 42.5 (I just reinstalled it temporarily to get the file) and then install the latest version of Pd, but replace the new version of msgfile.dll with the old one taken from 42.5. I hope this is of use to someone else
