I think it's something to do with the interval between numbers when 'dragging your mouse'..

Normally, the interval is 1.0, but if you choose a 'log scale' then log height becomes relevant

It appears to be the range in pixels that you have to scroll the mouse to go from min to max. So, if you set the range of [nbx] to be 0.01 to 1, turn on log-scaling, and have the log height be 256, you would have to drag your mouse up 256 pixels to reach a value of 1.
