I'd love to be able to read .gif files, [pix_film] doesn't seam to work (on mac), I can do it no prob with Max/Msp (as its using quicktime) but can't seam to get it to work with PD, any idea?

Using Ubuntu 13.10 I was able to install gmerlin and then I could read animated gifs in [pix_film]. Here's the related bug report http://lists.puredata.info/pipermail/gem-dev/2012-01/005813.html
If your gifs don't loop then reencode them with a delay. In Imagemagick:
mogrify -delay 100 allgifs*.gif
