hello
i am new to pd and i wanted to figure out if it how to create sample maps? So that i can select samples just with the move of an an slider for example...
Actually i want to open files randomly (possibly every file which is on my harddrive) - play them back and after they end open a new random file and play it back and so on. So i thought maybe i will need a kind of databank to be read out which is containg all files. I allready managed to scan direcories and put the pathnames of the files into a txt file...
So would it be possible to open files randomly wihtout having a opening dialog? Am i on the right way?

If you've managed to fill a textfile with the filename and locations of all of your samples, then you might want to use [msgfile] to call them up. [msgfile] allows you to reference a line number in your textfile, so if you know how many lines are in the file, you could easily randomize which one to send to a [soundfiler] or [readsf~]. Something along these lines:

[random 10]
|
[goto $1, this(
|
[msgfile]
|
[read $1(
|
[readsf~]

hey maelstorm, i wanted to use this technique in one of my patches, but somehow it seems, that msgfile interprets my textfile as one line. when i send a message to msgfile like that:

[goto 1, this(
|
[msgfile]
|
[print]

it does print the whole textfile to the pd window. how can i tell it only to print out one line?
