I was messing around with the adc~ object, and I can get sound from my computer's microphone input, but not from the line in. How can I get it to work?

what system are you using? if linux, I recommend jackd. I've heard good things about soundflower and hammerfall on mac, but haven't really used either of those mixer/routers. If windows, install linux.

I'm on Ubuntu Gutsy, and I use JACK. I'm not sure how to do this with JACK, although I'd like to.
I know that when I tried the adc~ object with ALSA or OSS selected, I get a little noise from channels 1 and 2, which are apparently the microphone jack. But I can't get audio from any other channels, even when I plug an instrument into the line in (which I can hear when I turn it up in the system volume control, but not in Pd). What am I doing wrong?

(bump) Anyone? This is probably easy, but I have no clue what I'm doing.

things you might try:
drop into super user for jack and pd
killall esd
killall pam
check levels in alsactl, or alsamixer, or alsamxergui, something

What soundcard do you have? Trying Sunji's alsamixer idea is a good option. Some soundcards support simultaneous mic/line input, some do not.
If you want to use jack, you should use Jack as your audio device in PD, not OSS or ALSA. I'd install qjackctl if I were you, to get the syntax right when starting jack. Start jack with qjackctl, then run pd, with jack as the audio device. Check the routing window in qjackctl to see if everything is flowing right.

OK, figured it out. My soundcard is some built-in crap that doesn't support simultaneous mic/line, but that's not a problem at the moment.
So what I had to do was go into the GNOME volume control (not sure how this is done in the terminal) and switch to the OSS mixer and switch from mic recording to line recording.
nestor: I currently use the method you described to run Pd with JACK, so it's good to know I've been doing it right.
And sunji: Thanks for the encouragement! I looked at your website, and I see we have a similar aesthetic. "Meister Nietzsche, niceta meetcha" spoonerist poetry is EXACTLY the kind of thing I've been obsessed with for a while (e.g. http://www.lubbertdas.org/larry.mp3)

brilliant ichabod! I think we on this forum are on the cusp of something big. May I play larry on KGNU Boulder Colorado, provided they ever let me run the electronic show?
