It seems that the whole "which distro" question has just drastically changed for ppc users, as ubuntu is ceasing it's support for the architecture. Ubuntu seems very popular for it's package management and sexy flavor. What other distros are people using on ppc? Should I go with;

Legacy Ubuntu (3.x? 4.x?)

YDL

Something else.

Obviuously it needs to be running pd at low priority on a stock powerbook and have all types of good driver support, etc.

Also, does anyone know if Ubuntu is making packages and apt-get unavailable for ppc as well?

If I were in your position I might be tempted to go back to vanilla Debian, ppc supported by a smaller community, but still supported. You probably don't need some of the less fancy Ubuntu stuff by now.

I am tempted to do exactly that. However, I did manage to find a repository for the PPC version of Feisty Fawn, which is the latest version until the end of the month. I would love an all-in-one distro which I can strip down later, so that I can just get started asap. I would also love to not have to worry too much about installing too many dependencies, drivers, libraries and the like, this is what has kept me away in the past. Oh, can anyone tell me if Hans' Debian/Ubuntu extended build would be binary compatible with ppc?

I usually don't give shouts out to fedora core, but in this case I believe they still have a PPC distro available. FC is a big all-in-one distro, it always ran very well on my old powerbook G4.

I can vouch for Debian testing/Lenny on PPC, I switched from Ubuntu a while ago and everything is running pretty smooth on my 12" Powerbook G4. You will be losing some of your "sexy flavor", but most things will be very familiar. For instance you can still use Synaptic for package management/dependancies.

And if you're looking to strip things down, Debian is definitly the way to go. I did a net install and compiled a realtime kernel, and now it's running crazy fast.

As for Hans' Debian/Ubuntu build, as far as I know it should be compatable with other distro's, as long as it doesn't put something in a funky place that that distro is not familiar with.

I've just done a netinstall of Debian etch and it worked flawlessly. I did not do a realtime kernel install. Is this available by entering 'expert' at the boot prompt, or should i recompile the kernel from somewhere else? I also managed to get pd and gem going quite easily, I dare say it was harder in osx and windows! One question; where is the config file in linux? I need to start adding a bunch of paths and binaries so I can have some fun!
