Hi,

This is my first post here. I have a Raspberry Pi 2, model b and pd .46-7. My ultimate goal is to embed the Pi in a midi controller I'm making and use it headless, running pd with the audio coming out of the mini jack on the pi.

In the dialong box under the media menu called OSS-MIDI is it possible to have the first available midi device added as the input device 1 and output device 1 ?

I downloaded a file called "midicheck.pd" from this link:

and I installed it. but it doesn't seem to work that great for me. Maybe I did something wrong with it. Is there a way to initialize the midi from with in my patch?

the hcs library has a patch called
get-midi-dialog-help.pd

If you don't want to use external, do the following:
Put a [r pd] in your patch and connect that to a [print]. Open the MIDI Settings... choose your setting and click on "Apply". A message like the following will appear on Pd's console (among some others, like "watchdog"):
print: midi-dialog 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 1
This is a message I got with no MIDI device connected to my laptop. Your will probably differ. Copy this message and paste it into a message. Connect a [loadbang] to this message and the message to a [s pd]. Taken that you connect your MIDI device(s) before you launch Pd, this will set your desired settings as soon as you open the patch that contains the above.

Alexandros, thanks for your suggestion. I did what you specified. I got "midi-dialog 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 2 2". After I quit Pd and restarted it with the patch started up I got this message in the Pd window:

Opened Alsa Client 128 in:2 out:2

But my device still didn't work. I had to go into the OSS-MIDI dialog and hit apply for the device to start sending and receiving. But the device was already selected in the dialog boxes, so all I had to do was hit "apply" where as before I had to select my device in the dialog boxes.

Any other suggestions? I'm still trying to figure out how to add the extra libraries, as I'm new with linux and it's tough for me. But I'm going to try and figure out how to add the hcs library too.

@nicnut Do you need to use the OSS emulator? If not, you can go into Flle-->Preferences-->Startup and put "-alsamidi" in the "startup flags" portion of the dialog. Or you may also be able to just select "ALSA-MIDI" from the Media dropdown menu, then select Flle-->Preferences-->Save all Settings.

As I understand it, the OSS-MIDI section is there for backwards compatibility with the pre-ALSA system, but it's not the "real" OSS system, just an emulator that runs through ALSA anyway. If OSS-MIDI is selected at startup, you won't have access to any ALSA ports that have been setup until you switch it over.

OK. Well I think I made some progress.

Here is a little more info on what I am doing: I am using an arduino as a midi controller by installing MIDI/MOCO for LUFA on the USB port of the Arduino. I don't know if that's OSS midi device or not.

I put "-alsamidi" in the startup flags and that sort of worked. when I started pd some of the midi inputs worked, but the midi outputs were not working ( I am sending messages from Pd to turn on LEDs). When I went into the OSS-MIDI dialog box in the media drop down menu I just had open it and everything was fine. I don't even need to hit OK or APPLY, just open dialog box and everything is good.

I'm guessing perhaps having OSS and ALSA midi is confusing my controller. If I could turn off the OSS part maybe I would be fine, or if I could find a way to open that dialog box when I launch Pd.

Why are you using the Arduino as a MIDI device and not as a serial device, which is what it actually is? Do you want to be strictly vanilla?

Alexandros, that's a good question. I am still in the process of making the midi controller I want with a Raspberry pi embedded in it, so for now I am using one I already have constructed that works with my Mac, but i am planning on using another arduino in the same way. When I am finished making my new one I also want to have the option to use it with a Mac. I think it's going to be pretty cool.
