Hi,

I just installed Pure Data on my intel MacBook, i made sure i got the extended version which i thought would have the osc library already bundled, but when i open PD and create a [dumpOSC 8000] object i get a dotted red line around the object and the status window says 'couldn't create'

i can get this working on my PC but i need to get it working on the mac aswel...

can anyone help me?

On my version, which I believe is up-to-date, the osc objects are individual binaries: dumpOSC.pd_darwin, etc. they reside in .../extra/oscx. So, you'll have to add the oscx directory to your path. You can add paths in the Preferences dialog. Annoyingly, you can only add external paths, not anything like /Applications/Pd-extended/Resources/etc. Anybody have a solution? Is there a .plist somewhere we can edit?

I'm pretty sure you can, cause a mac osx app is basically a folder containing resources. So your path will look like: "/Applications/Pd-extended.app/Resources/extra/oscx"

Weng: That's right, but, you have to right click or ctrl+click it, then select "view package contents" which the little dialogue that pops up won't let you do.

Right, but you can still manually change the org.puredata.pd.plist file to add libs and paths. I had mistakenly assumed that this was deprecated. This is not the case.

@dave: You'll have to add the oscx directory to the abovementioned file, which resides in your /Library/Preferences directory. Also, change the variable npath in the file to reflect the number of path entries.

You're right godinpants and nestor. I never added paths in the preferences dialog, and the way it handles it seems completely non-practical.

I always added paths with the "declare" object, so that i everytime i load a patch, it loads automatically the libs that i need for it to work properly.

thanks for all the responses, i had a look at my org.puredata.pd.default.plist file and the word oscx is coming up underlined in red so i guess this is what i should change,
at the moment it looks like this,

<key>loadlib14</key>
<string>motex</string>
<key>loadlib15</key>
<string>oscx</string>
<key>loadlib16</key>
<string>pddp</string>

is this how it should look, what should i change it to?

I think you actually need to add the PATH to your file, not libs, since the objects are compiled separately.

something like this:

<key>path44</key>
<string>/Applications/Pd-extended/Contents/Resources/extra/oscx</string>

also make sure that the value for the key npath (npath?) will be a high enough number to actually use that path.

hmm i tried that and it still doesnt work... i tried

and still no joy.. are you sure i dont add a line in the statup section?

tried it there and still doesnt work. i cant see the difference in the 2 files..

I just added the ".app" after the "Pd-extended" string.

I just managed to try this, and It did, in fact, work for me.

just dropped nestor's attachment into the contents folder and it worked..

You are most welcome. This kind of thing can be frustrating, and it seems to happen a lot. If I remember correctly the current OSCx doesn't compile properly as a single standalone binary. Smaller libraries (like oscx) often get compiled as individual binaries (dumpOSC, etc...) in which case it is much easier to add the path instead of each binary as a lib. In addition, remember, when adding libs and paths, to adjust the limiting variables in your .plist file. For libraries it is <key>nlib</key> and for paths <key>npath</key>. This goes for linux too, in respect to the invisible config file in your home directory(which is the first that gets checked).

sorry, same problem here...i've tried to load Nestor's plist but i still cannot make sendOSC... why is this? i'm a little bit frustrated with all this problem. i mean, i can load pdp, pidip and gem by just add them to the startup flags, but why can't i load oscx on startup?

I was having this trouble too.

Having two patches open with the same port number seemed to be one cause.

Deleting a digit of the dump0SC port number and then replacing it seems to offer one workaround.
