Hi all,
I am struggling with the equivalent of a simple text entry in Pd ( i.e. a single entry text line like every GUI is providing, including Tk).
I wish to paste the text content of the clipboard (copied from somewhere else but Pd) into a the equivalent of a "text entry" box which would be held in an abstraction.
In Pd : The symbol box does not accept paste from clipboard ( barely X-paste) => So I can't use it
The message box... does not show on parent window whe belonging to an abstraction => So can't use it, neither.

What could be a solution?

@JMC64 This is a missing feature in Pd. You can use a [click( message to a [text] object to open the text window where you can paste the text. It has to be saved before closing. Displaying the text is then another question.

@JMC64 I don't see a text entry box becoming implemented anytime in the near future, but very little needs to be done to make it possible to accomplish your goals. [key] and [keyname] already accept text from the system clipboard, if you paste text they will output it as key entry, the problem is that pd always pastes from it's own clipboard and kicks you into edit mode unless you are already in editmode and have clicked an object to edit it. So all we need it PD to default to the system clipboard unless in edit mode and not have ctrl-v kick us into edit mode, the devs might see value in this and it would likely be very simple to implement. Every other part of a text box is simple to do in vanilla.

As the symbol editor doesn't recognize backspace, I wrote this:

But it's not more clipboard-compatible…

Did you try [entry] from flatgui and [messbox] from else? or were you looking for something else?

FlatGui does not want to compile anymore and Messbox does not accept X- paste and CTRL-V sends you into Pd edit mode....

Just to make it clear: I need to paste into whatever is compatible with Ctr-V and/or X-paste the path of samples ( so I cannot afford making typo mistakes somewhere in long strings) and which is visible in a subpatch or in an abstraction.

@JMC64 This is the closest you can probably get with vanilla, using the click + text method:

In the abstraction there are bangs underneath the canvas. If you click into the abstraction, the textbox opens, you can use CTRL + v to paste, CTRL + s saves the text, closes the textbox and displays the text on the canvas. No spaces supported in this demo.

one hacky way to get around this is to put this in some *-plugin.tcl file in your pd path. it will always undo going into edit mode immediately after pasting something if you aren't in edit mode before the paste:

@seb-harmonik.ar Unfortunately both [entry] and [messbox] do also paste Pd objects if you previously copied one.

Reproduce by creating [entry], [messbox] and a bang, copy the bang, copy some text from anywhere, paste the text into the two textobjects.

@ingox yes I mentioned that in the bug report.
the .tcl plugin I posted does hack around that by automatically putting pd back in run mode after the paste if you're in run mode when pasting

@ingox oh right. duh. well I guess the only way is fix it in else, or find some way to tell if the event is from a focused [messbox] (or the Text tk class)...

here's another version that just disallows all pasting of pd objects in run mode (so also won't put it into edit mode):

@JMC64 On linux and OSX you can use [ggee/shell] to handle the clipboard, here is a quick abstraction, will combine with most of the text box solutions mentioned and simple to assign it a key combination if you want that. Just bang it's input to get the clipboard. On linux xsel or xclip may need to be installed, not all flavors of linux come with one of them. Neither the xclip method or the OSX pbpaste method have been tested by me but should work, I have not used OSX in a good while and my xclip seems to have an issues with erratic output which I don't care enough to sort out at this time. There is probably a way to extend this to windows as well, but no clue.

@ingox : I am totally amazed by your little patch... Hidding bangs behind the canvas is really nice. As I avoid space in file names (old command line habit ) I am really grateful to your solution : elegant and simple. I just needed to edit it a little to change the size. However, for long lines... Text goes out of the canvas. Enclosed a modified version which on keep the file name and gets rid of the path... but outputs the full path of the file: abstraction2.pd
