Smoothing the 'pops' out of a looped live sample
so. since i can't afford a fancy loopstation pedal, i'm making one in pd and taking advantage of my low-latency soundcard.
i've made a set of midi trigger pedal buttons - 8 channels, two buttons each channel (one for "record", one to toggle "play" or "silent"). you stomp on the "record" button on the first track and start playing music, then when you're done you hit the button again and the track starts playing back on loop. every subsequent track records in sync with the first loop. you can alter the volume of each of the 8 loop tracks, or stop and start them at will.
i use the [tabwrite~] object to record each loop, then play them back using [tabread]s controlled by [line~]s.
despite driving myself bonkers trying to program the operation of the button interface, so far everything's shaping up well. but the biggest annoyance is the 'pop' that you get when a loop of a constant but unsteady sound (ie, a single sustained violin note, recorded badly) jumps back to the zero position to start playing again - due to a difference in amplitude between the end of the loop and the start.
could anyone suggest a way that i could automatically alter the end of each recorded array so that over the final few milliseconds the amplitude is smoothed (or 'faded') to approach the amplitude at the exact start of the loop? i'm guessing this might eliminate the jump in amplitude that causes the 'pop' effect - let me know if you think i'm wrong
err, hope this is understandable.
cheers,
jon.

Remember MIDI information
ok, so currently you have a headless OSX box, i'm guessing this is a Mac Mini from the sound of it?
you want to have pure data start right when you start it up? or are you going to be using some sort of remote login (do macs have SSH?? OSX is basically Unix these days so i would think they do)
basically the command line arguments are passed to pure data when you start it up
so for example, lets say you;re starting it from a short cut. the shortcut has the path to the PD executable. if edited the short cut so it was
"/path/to/folder/pd.exe -midiindev 1 -midioutdev 2"
then pure data wouldstart up and get the arguments passed to it and then know that its using midi device 1 for input and midi device 2 for output.
o lets say you want to start up PD without the GUI, with midi device 1 as input, midi device 2 as output and you want the patch awsumsounds.pd to start up, your command line would be
"/path/to/folder/pd.exe -nogui -midiindev 1 -midioutdev 2 -open /path/to/awsumsounds.pd"
apologies if you already get this, wasnt sure how basic to start so i figured the beginning is best heh.
if you wanted pure data to start automatically when you turn the machine on then youd have to put a shortcut in whatever mac uses to run things at startup.
alternativly you could start the machine up, ssh into it from another machine and then start pure data yourself using the command line above, however you might need to play tricks to get it to carry on going after you log out.
hope thats all helpful, i'm afraid that i dont know about some of the more mac specific stuff
Calendar in pd?
Thank you, aeo and Maelstorm!
And my apologies for long absence!
You're right, the [date] and [shell] would help me get the current system date, but that's not exactly what's needed.
The problem looks like this:
There's a unit of measure, a day.
There's a couple of cycles, say, a 5-day cycle, a 10-day cycle, a 27-day cycle.
All cycles start simultaneously and run continuously. Just like sine waves with different periods, creating different combinations every day. It is easy to get the state of the system, ie the amplitude of each wave, for any given day of its operation.
However, we do not think in terms of "how many days", we think dates. And our conventional Gregorian calendar doesn't have any simple mathematical formula behind it and is therefore difficult to express in pd. (isn't it?)
So we have a [bang< on, say, 01/01/99, the cycles start running, and we want to know the state of the system on, say, 01/01/01, ie on 732nd day of its operation. Now I had to calculate the number of days of operation in my head (and hopefully did it correctly). Can pd do this job for me? So all I need to do is input two dates, one indicating start, one - target date?
Sorry if my explanation is awkward, I hope that the task itself is quite comprehensible!
Best,
Vadim

Announcement: Pd Book is released
I am pleased to announce that the big Pure Data (Pd) tutorial I wrote
in the last years with the help of a grant by the Music University of
Freiburg / Germany, is now online, in english and in german.
It is also available as a book (paperback) and can be purchased at Wolke Publishing House.
http://www.wolke-verlag.de/musik_u_t/loadbang.html
Pd was initiated by American software engineer Miller Puckette, who
previous co-developed the well known and similarly structured software
Max/Msp. Pd is not commercial software; i.e., it was not developed by
a corporation and is not for sale. Instead, it is "open source": its
source code is not the (patented) property of a corporation, but is
rather freely available to all. One drawback to this is that a
detailed operating manual for users who lack programming experience
has not existed until now. In contrast to a corporation--- which has a
monetary interest in ensuring that first-time users can easily operate
new software---the open source movement lacks such a driving force to
make itself accessible. This book is an attempt to fill that gap.
This tutorial is designed for self-study, principally for composers.
It begins with explanations of basic programming and acoustic
principles then gradually builds up to the most advanced electronic
music processing techniques. The book's teaching approach is focused
primarily on hearing, which we consider a faster and more enjoyable
way to absorb new concepts than through abstract formulas.
The patches described are available for download.

Johannes Kreidler
Arduino and pure data
Hello. I'm trying to use Arduino with Puredata using the Firmata Library. I downloaded Firmata and installed the library as instructed in the readme, and then loaded 'AnalogFirmata' from the library examples. When I try to compile this example (or any of the others) I receive a string of error statements. Code and errors listed below. Any suggestions?

In function 'void setup()':
Axiome: live sample cutting
That's a good question domien: i spent so much time on it that i figured that it would be pretty self-explanatory. My mistake...
I'll write it as a start for a manual:
To play a slicer, you have to push a "radio" (they're vsl's too ). The sample starts at the position of the button (you have to imagine your sample apportionned on the eight buttons, even if it's 4bars length). To stop the sample, press "PLAYING" (i know this is not common sense, but wait for the next release...).
The sample-cutter (eight buttons) actions are quantized to 1/16. So you can start a loop and when it comes at the end, start a second one and if you get the good 1/16 timing, it will sync to the first one. And so on...
Now, the pattern section (darker grey):
A pattern is a recording of actions on the cutter-buttons.
Set the length. (in 1/16)
Press "record" -> it shows "press", waiting for an action on one of the cutter-buttons (not necessarily the first one) to start recording. You can cancel record-enabled, recording or playing states anytime by hitting the record button again.
So, if you enable record and press a cutter-button, you start the record counter (record button became "recording").
Play on the cutter-buttons to record a pattern loop.
At the end of the record loop, the pattern recording plays back automatically what you've just played and becomes "playing".
You can stop the slicer (press "PLAYING"), but the pattern is still playing in the background until you press ("playing") to stop it. You can start the slicer again (press any cutter-button and the pattern is plays at its current position).
@domien:
To start or stop several slicers simultaneously, you'll need to have either:
-several mouse pointers (duh!!?)
-a computer keyboard or a midi keyboard, with key assignments (you'll have to create an abstraction or subpatch. But that would not be difficult, just send bangs to the button's inputs... i may work on that later)
-Other hardware... like the monome, which buttons are mapped to the ui (see the subpatch monome_com inside the slicer abstracts.
Anyway, you can still get the samples in sync by waiting for the end/beginning of the other loop(s).
Hope i didn't confuse you with my long explanations.
Putting the draft into the package...
Oh and thanks for the compliment .
Cheers
