Forgive me for such a basic question, but how can I invoke the output abstraction as shown in Miller Puckette's examples, into a new patch of my own? When I type output~ into an object box it comes up with what seems like a simpler patch, which has an output (unlike Miller Puckette's).

I'm pretty sure there's something fundamental that I need to know about the creation of patches?! More generally I can't seem to copy and paste anything from an existing patch to a new window, and also when i open a new window all the file search paths listed seem to point to the 'extra' folder and not to 'docs'. Could this be why it doesn't recognise Miller's output~ abstraction?

Any advice would be welcome.

What I ended up doing was figuring out which one was the "right" one deleting all the others. The right one is the one in the examples folder. I think the others are in the extras and some of the sub-folders.

In turn, what I ended up doing was making several copies of output~, as in output1~, output2~, and so on, within my own folder (in "extras", so as to have everything in there available too). And so, (a) I am able to use several copies of the abstraction in a single patch, and (b) I am able to tweak each one separately.

Regarding copying from one patch to another, I eventually decided that this is not always possible because there often are just too many behind-the-scenes goings-on going on,.. so you just have to sweat out copying bits and parts piecemeal, or manually, in such cases. The upside of that is that you gradually begin to understand something of the wild logic of it all~:o)

P.S. I think that the *seemingly simple patch* you speak of appearing is just the mapping of controls from the abstraction into your patch. The clue is "map to parent" or some such thing. Just right-click and "open" to get into the abstraction itself.

I figured out how to do the map-to-parent thing, but as far as the output~ object goes, I still couldn't find the location of Miller's example abstraction (the one with a dB and Mute control within the abstraction). I ended up just copying everything in the patch and pasting to a new patch. I will follow your advice Shankar and make several copies.

Just right-click in the box you named output~ Brett, and hit 'Open'.

You'll have the abstraction jump right up at you, and find that it is actually just the file named "output.pd"
